Remnant

What remains of a persistent Soulforged's soul.

Written by starzomskiwrites

Temper stared down at the shell of what they once were, the empty body of the Soulforged slowly returning to the earth. Remembering the limitations of its past form compared to the freedom they had lived recently, the dying Remnant had only one thought:   "Pathetic."

What is a Remnant?

When the body of a Soulforged fails, the Weavecrystal heart may sometimes live on. If the body fails and the heart persists, the soul can take on a new form, not returning to the Infinite Weave, but rather manifesting beyond the steel shell and becoming what some have called a "Remnant" or a "Weaveborn." A Remnant is the physical embodiment of the Infinite Weave on the world of Akronis. Unfortunately, due to their unstable nature, a Remnant cannot survive for long, the longest surviving for maybe 3 years at most. The longer they live, the faster they decay, and the more their suffering increases.   Due to their short lives, Remnants live their life in complete indulgence. They recognize that they might as well live their life to the fullest, so they live them partying and doing crime, freely doing what they never could as a Soulforged in service to an artificer. Like Soulforged, they cannot reproduce, and as such have no true concept of gender. Most simply just use the singular they, though few of high status choose to adopt "he" or "she" to further indulge in the lives of other mortals. Some of them keep their Soulforged "name" out of memory, though others abandon it to shed the weaknesses of their former life.

Remnant Features

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice increase by 1.   Age. Remnants come into being as adults and live no more than three years.   Alignment. As a rule, remnants are driven by hedonism and self-interest, making them neutral at best and thoroughly evil at worst. Neutral remnants might devote much of their time (and wealth) to parties and social activity, while evil remnants are usually involved in the criminal underworld.   Size. Remnants are about the same size as humans, ranging from 5 to 6 feet tall. They are quite light—only about 100 pounds—and their weight diminishes as they age and more and more of their substance returns to the Weave. Your size is Medium.   Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.   Darkvision. Accustomed to the night, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.   Born of the Weave. You have resistance to force damage.   Menacing. You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill.   Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and another language of your choice, whatever language you knew in life as a Soulforged.

Jury, Crimelord of Lumengate

The Undercity of Lumemgate is full to the brim of crime. Impressively organized crime, but crime nonetheless. Among all of these syndicates, one of the most well-known gangs are "The Hidden Spirits," led by a Remnant named Jury. Jury isn't like your average Remnant though, she was brought into existence from her persistent spirit outlasting her dying body over 25 years ago. Allegedly, she has unlocked the "secret of Remnant immortality," though she does not share it with anyone. Other Remnants climb the ranks of the Hidden Spirits in search of a meeting with Jury to learn her secret, though none have been truly successful.

Death of a Remnant

At the end of a Remnant's life, their body discorporates from the rest of the world, returning to the Infinite Weave from whence it came. A Remnant cannot be resurrected save for by a wish spell, as they are completely re-integrated into the Infinite Weave. However, if you can find the remains of its previous Soulforged shell, it's soul can possibly be returned from the Infinite Weave to its body via a true resurrection spell, though the process is difficult for both the Remnant and the caster.
