Akronite

The fossilized remains of the First Dragon.

Fossils of the Universe

Long ago, Akronis, the First Dragon was slain by an avatar of the overdeity Qoztris. Overtime, the body of the dragon rotted, slowly transforming into the material plane we know now. But the plane is still his body, and some parts still remain. Overtime, the bones and organs of the dragon fossilized, becoming crystalline rather than simple stone due to the energies of the Outer Planes and the influence of the Weave.   During the Flowering Age, the first Akronite deposit was discovered and studied by elven scholars, all information being documented in their large, underground archaves. By the time of the Age of Arcanum, Akronite was commonplace in the Imperium as a material component for spells due to its resonant connection to the Weave. But during the Great Sundering, most of the Akronite deposits were harvested clean and the crystals themselves were used up, drained of their power to cast incredible spells. By the time of the Age of Imperium, Akronite was little more than a myth, written about in history books detailing the Great Sundering, or the subject of logs discovered in elven archaves. But Akronite still exists elsewhere in the material plane, beyond the Imperium's walls, deep in forgotten, uncharted lands.

What is Akronite?

Akronite is usually found as a brilliant green gem, outshining most emeralds in both color and hardness. It glows passively, but that glow is amplified in the presence of high quantities of magic. When used in a spellcasting focus, the spell itself is amplified by the soul of the First Dragon, incresasing its power and volatility. Though, there is a downside: intense utilization of Akronite as a spellcasting focus hastens the onset of mageburn from powerful spellcasting.   Dragons, and other draconic descendants that surround them, are the primary harvesters and users of Akronite in the Age of Imperium. It is used primarily in spiritual rituals, as offerings to the First Dragon, as well as for jewlery and other ceremonial rites. It is very rare for dragonborn that live around dragons to not be surrounded in Akronite, from rings and bracelets to necklaces, chokers, and circlets. Akronite is also a common currency in those communities, used as trade for other commodities.

Heart of Akronis

An ancient artifact shrouded in mystery, the Heart of Akronis is a religious artifact of incredible importance to a sect of moon druids that live in the Tangle known as the Heartbound. They revere it for its intense connection to the First Dragon, as it is supposed to be a chunk of the fossilized heart of Akronis himself. It is wielded by the archdruid of the sect, a wood elf born during the late Flowering Age. She discovered the crystal, and she claims that it speaks the will of the First Dragon directly to her. She is nearing the end of her incredibly long life, and the Heartbound are looking for someone new to take up the Heart and continue to lead them in her stead. They look for one that can save the tangle, one that seeks intense wisdom, and one with a deep connection to Akronis, both the land and the dragon.
