Legend of the Moon

The moon was born in a garden full of stars and glowing crystals created by her grandfather, and was quite happy. All seemed peaceful, but things are often not as they seem. A few smaller lights came up to the beautiful garden, and she was excited to meet them. However, no sooner had she run to the gate to greet them than her grandfather appeared, shouting them away with cruel words. The lights fled, but more returned over the coming days. Every time new lights appeared in supplication, begging for sanctuary, her grandfather spoke in harshness and drove them away. Over time her heart grew heavy and her light dimmed, thinking of all those poor lights out in the cold, and of how lonely she was in the garden on her own.   Setting her mind to it, she hatched a plan. Hiding some of the magic crystals and her grandfather’s tools in her apron, she stole away as he slept, and started to build an intricate birdcage. One by one they gathered as she wove its metal tethers together, and she asked them if they wished to go far away with her to make a new garden where they could live in peace. The lights rejoiced and piled inside as she fitted the last few bars together. A shout came, the angry voice of her grandfather as he woke and realized her deception. She put in the crystals, resolute, and the magic cage levitated and shot away in the air.   His shouted words of anger shook the very bars of the cage, but its metal held and eventually they passed far beyond his voice. After days of flying through the air, the crystals faded and they dropped from the sky. When they came to, they found themselves standing on green, vibrant earth with mountains stretching from either side. She rejoiced and said that this must be where they are meant to make a new home, and they built their warren around the place the cage fell as it was blessed soil.
