Legionary is the fourth great mortal language group. The name was given by
Elven scholars, and is rejected by most of those who speak the extant languages of the family in favour of 'Orcan'.
The root language of the family is the Dark Speech, a language formulated by the
Dark Lords as a language of authority and dominion to be the medium of command for their servants, and also as a secret language to conceal their intentions. For the latter purpose, the language was created to be incomprehensible to celestial beings, including other gods. Since the deaths of the Dark Lords, the Dark Speech itself has been abandoned, but the Orcan languages remain obscure to celestial and many forms of magical panglossia.
Orcate
Orcate describes the languages of the
Orcs, primarily
Orcish and its various dialect families:
Darklander, Northern Orcish and the Cainan languages known as Westorc. Blending Dark Speech and the
Titanic Languages of the
Regime, Orcish is often considered a hybrid language.
Gothmi
Descending from
Hordish - a language born from the mixing of primitive
Goblinoid languages and Horde Tongue, the variation of Dark Speech used to give orders to the Horde - the Gothmi languages are used by the various goblinoids. Like Orcish, they are commonly considered hybrid tongues.
Gothmagh is the language of
Kyuzh-magh, shared by the various lineages of southern
Moraea.
Ungoth is the dialect family of subterranean goblins.
Shangoth is spoken and written in
Refuge, and combines both Gothmi and Orcate elements.
Nogoth is the language of the
Goblin Fiefdoms, also used by the goblins in the
Sacred Republic.
