Nephilim

Nephilim

Lore directly from wh40k.lexicanum   The Nephilim were a minor but malevolent xenos species encountered on Melchior by the Blood Angels and the Luna Wolves during the Great Crusade. They fed on adoration and worship and subjugated their world's native human population in order to satisfy this hunger.   The Nephilim towered over even Horus, up to twice as tall as a Legionary, and moved slowly, like beasts swimming through water, but could move much faster when fighting. Their native language used hypersonic frequencies and flashes of bio-luminescence, making it impossible to translate. To speak Low Gothic, they utilized an implant to generate a vibrating field to create sounds; this implant could also be used as a sonic weapon. Their hands had three stubby fingers. Their social hierarchy consisted of distinguishing colors of their bloated, oblate bodies: blue "rank and file", green "squad sergeants", and grey "commanders".   The Nephilim fed on adulation. They arrived on worlds and preached of heaven and salvation. Through either psychic manipulation or sheer charisma, the Nephilim converted human populations to their religion. They fashioned masks of their own flesh for their devotees, which were fused to their faces and psychically bonded them together. In turn, the faithful built praise-chapels and copper towers. The Nephilim consumed lives, leaving their faithful as desiccated husks. By the time the Luna Wolves and Blood Angels fought the Nephilim on Melchior, the xenos had stripped worlds of all human life.   The Nephilim's homeworld of Hoadh was eventually located by the White Scars, and Jaghatai Khan oversaw the destruction of the Nephilim. Years later, during the start of the Horus Heresy, Horus tricked Sanguinius into taking his Legion to the Signus Cluster, claiming that the Nephilim had not been exterminated, but had returned to enslave the human population again. Horus also deceived Sanguinius into believing that the Nephilim, with their experience of mind manipulation, possessed a device that could cure the Blood Angels' secret affliction.

Nephilim Biology

The Nephilim towered over 3.5 meters tall and moved slowly, like beasts swimming through water, but could move much faster when fighting.   The Nephilim had round torsos, flat on the back and the front, their heads being little more than lumps atop their torso, with a pair of beady black eyes nestled into their otherwise featureless face. At the end of their long, thick arms the Nephilim had hands with three stubby fingers and their legs were similar in form.   Their native language used hypersonic frequencies and flashes of bio-luminescence, making it impossible to translate. To speak Low Gothic, they utilized an implant to generate a vibrating field to create sounds; this implant could also be used as a sonic weapon.   Their social hierarchy consisted of distinguishing colors of their bloated, oblate bodies: blue "rank and file", green "squad sergeants", and grey "commanders".   The “blues” are the youngest of the species. As they age their flesh becomes more and more greener in color. Well into this transition the “Green” begins to shed large masses of flesh the grow into newer Nephilim “blues”. As the Greens further age, they begin to lose they green color. This marked the end-of-life cycle, with them then becoming “Greys”. Once the greys lose their color, they become more and more stiff. Eventually the greys will completely harden into a rock like from and die.   The Nephilim feed on adulation. Most commonly seen through spiritual adulations, a Nephilim can gain energy from any form of praise directed to it. To gather the most energy from creatures such creatures, they fashioned masks of their own flesh which were then fused to their faces and psychically bonded them and the Nephilim together. This source of physic energy is much desired by the Nephilim and why many travel the cosmos is search of “followers”.   This is not the only means of how the Nephilim consume energy however. The Nephilim can absorb mater through their skin, in a way ‘eating’ organic and no organic material to gain carbohydrates and nutrients like any other creature.

Hippy dippy stuff.   Stage one; when the Nephilim encounter another sentient settlement the go about proselytizing the locals. Preaching their universal, naturalistic views on the cosmos and the quest for “happiness”” and “self-enlightenment”. These views are often altered and modeled to fit the locals in order to gather as many worshippers as possible.   Stage 2: When a sizable group of worshippers have been brought into the fold the Nephilim may begin to incorporate stricter practices into the group. This will ultimately collimate into Nephilim skin cutting and mask sharing.   Stage 3; Giving the masks to their followers to wear, makes their followers more psychically connected to the Nephilim that the mask was made from. Drawing in massive amounts of energy from the wearer to the Nephilim. Over the Coming weeks and months, the mask wearer will slowly turn into a skeletal hulk and die.
