Summary
Mars – 40k lore
“Many warring factions vied for power on Mars and waged a brutal civil conflict using arcane and unimaginably destructive weaponry, including psychic abilities. The carefully constructed atmosphere of Mars was burned away, and once more the rusty surface of the planet was exposed to the deadly radiations of the Sun. The terraformed Martian environment, which had teemed with Terran life for centuries, was rendered a barren crimson desert again. The Martian combatants now fought in the same blood-hued wastelands that the first human colonists from Terra had found millennia before. Much of the Martian population retreated underground, as any who were not equipped with a radiation and life support suit could not long survive on the Red Planet's harsh surface.
In time, one faction emerged dominant over all the others that had contended for dominion over Mars -- the Cult of the Machine God, the Mechanicum. Believing deeply in a strange theology which held that the expression of the universe's divinity, the Omnissiah, was embodied in advanced technology and machines, the Cult Mechanicum established its rule over the Red Planet and erected massive new manufactorums and hive cities across the world, divided into different city-states known as forges or forge cities. Each forge was ruled by a high-ranking Tech-priest, and the entirety of the Mechanicum's hierarchy bowed to the high priest known as the Fabricator-General.
With their world secure, the rulers of the faith and their followers deemed it time to expand outwards. Building great fleets of interstellar ships, the first missionaries and explorers ventured out to find that the sol system was in chaos. The following recovery of Techology and resources resulted in more fleet being launch. Soon war against alien and man alike was fought for the riches of lost technology and the needed resources to fuel the innovation of research back on mars.
As time passed and the storms in the warp eased, the mechanicum even sent out fleets into the greater galaxy in search of lost technological treasures. which led to the founding of the first Forge Worlds.
For millennia the Mechanicum ruled over Mars, sending out colony expeditions to spread its faith and its way of life across the galaxy,
Mars also made war upon the divided techno-barbarian states that ruled Terra at this time, as many of these ignorant savages had access to advanced technologies left over from the Age of Technology that they did not understand or know how to venerate properly. This innate hostility between Mars and Terra lasted for centuries until in the late 30th Millennium, following his victory in the Unification Wars on Terra, the Emperor of Mankind came to Mars and landed atop the great volcano of Olympus Mons.
At their first sight of the Master of Mankind many Tech-priests were overcome with the feeling that they had met the living embodiment of the Omnissiah, the Machine God clad in human form. In return for peace between Terra and Mars, the recognition of the Tech-priests' right to practice their faith and their right to maintain control over both Mars and the other Forge Worlds they had settled, the Mechanicum agreed to build Imperial starships at Mars' Ring of Iron orbital fleet yards and provide all of the war materiel necessary for the Emperor's Great Crusade.”
Phobos
Phobos is a gun-studded world, used as an orbital fortress which protects the Red Planet.
Deimos
When Malcador the Sigillite created the Grey Knights Chapter during the Horus Heresy, the moon of Deimos was displaced from its orbit and relocated to the orbit about Titan by way of hidden, arcane technologies.
This moon provides the Grey Knights with the majority of their ammunition, armour and equipment which ranges from psycannons to Land Raider components to starship ordnance within the Forge World's subterranean halls. Furthermore, Deimos holds the STC imprints for the entire canon Space Marines' lore and other wonderful weapon. Only the more unique weapons such as Nemesis Force Weapons are not made on Deimos, instead they are crafted by the Chapter's Techmarines at their Fortress Monastery. The transfer of Deimos-produced equipment is primarily done through dull-minded Servitors who have their memories scrubbed shortly after completing their task. This process prevents the arcane secrets of the Grey Knights from falling into the hands of the Adeptus Mechanicus whilst also allowing the Adepts of Mars to shelter their own dangerous knowledge from the Chapter.
Deimos has both defending Skitarii as well as 3 Knight Houses, including House Steel. These normally act as guards but will sometimes march forth with the Grey Knights.

Brief Summary of …The Martian Technocracy or Cult Mechanicum
Operating from their holy home world of Mars. The Martian Technocracy or Cult Mechanicum, is a theocracy centred around the worship of human technology. As a result of their mastery of science and manufacturing they have become the most powerful human nation within the sol system.
From their humble beginnings as techno cult preserving what scrapes of sciences they had assess too, the cult has emerged from there underground bunkers under Mars to take complete control of the planet. Once they have won, turning Mars into a world devoted to their religion of technological preservation and construction.
In that pursuit they have spread out into the sol system and beyond in order to reclaim lost sciences and the needed resources to continue in their cult practises back on mars. To this end the Cult Mechanicum has created a petty colonial empire taking in fiefs from their solar colonies in the form of raw materials and rare technologies. The only reason why they have yet to conquered the sol system in its entirety, the cult refuses to devote the necessary resources and more importantly technology, to those ends.
While each Forge World is led by its own Fabricator General, it is the Fabricator of Mars who is considered the de facto leader of the Cult Mechanicus. Beneath the Fabricator General is the Fabricator Locum who in turn may call upon and command Magi Technicus, Metallurgicus, Alchemys, Cogitatrices, Pedanticum, Tech-assassins, hive monitors and Holy Requisitioners, who in turn can command a body of fabricators minoris, Fulgurites, Corpuscarii, overseers, underseers, stasis clerks, and techno-dervishes.
