History Summary

“It would seem that sailing is the destiny of Mankind. From the ancient Terran oceans to the hell that the warp drives throw them into today, Mankind saw, understood, and conquered every ocean they encountered. This was also the case for the Jovian moon of Europa.”   Before Long Night, nearly every moon of Jupiter worth a damn was colonized by humanity. Europa, rich in water and water-based biological material, was one of the most important moons in the Jovian system.   However, the process of colonizing the moon was long and hazardous. At a glance, Europa was a desolate ice moon, not capable of supporting life. Early in humanities exploration of the sol system they discovered that the moon had in fact held deep oceans underneath the visible ice sheets covering the planet. Since the early days of space exploration past the asteroid belt, Europa became an important source of water. In the beginning, the water extraction was dangerous. The ice sheet that the first colonies stood on were always shifting and many died. As Terraforming techniques developed, Europa ice sheets were slowly melted away, but this did little to help the dangerous existence on the moon. The moon   By the height of the Dark Age of Technology, Europa was at its most prosperous. Transformed into a full and proper ocean world, populated with all sorts of both native and foreign plants and animals, the world was an abundant source of food stuffs, medicines, and drinking water.   As the dark age of technology spiraled into the Age of Strife; the animals and organisms of Europe became more and more corrupted. Both by man and by the warp.   When the Warp Storms severed travel from sol to the rest of the galaxy, Europa was a center of dispute as one of the few in system bread baskets.   The Jovain subsystem became the domain of waring factions most notably cruel xeno raiders. Europa would fight to remain independence for much of this time. fought off the invaders for thousands of years. The warp anomalies that troubled even the Dark Age of Tech humanity became more and more prevalent. Some local psychers would imploded into themselves, creating warp gates for what can only be called "Daemon Ships".   As the Age dragged on, the Europans turned their moon largely self sufficient inorder to remain independent from off world forces.   During the Solar Reclamation the Emperor and his Astartes cleansed Jupiter and its moons of Xenos and mutant taint. Europa, thankful to their saviour, excepted membership into the Imperium of Man. The Emperor, already saddened by the loss of Terra’s natural water, and the Mechanicus who needed said water, agreed to protect the ecosystem of Europa. This meant that Europa would be the biomaterial producer of Jupiter, sending more algae and meat than minerals, as the mass mining of said minerals would destroy the more needed biomatter.   Most Europans were happy with their new working conditions and supported the Mechanicus as they had the technology and means to further the reach of Europains into the deep oceans of the moon. New outposts and facilities were made in record time as the servitors, uncaring of depth or death, worked until they rusted.   However, there was still an old-minded part of the population that missed the old days. In their minds, the generations-long warfare against the aliens hardened the Europan population, made them independent and powerful, and these new Imperial overlords were simply another leash on their necks.   When the Horus Heresy reached the Sol system, these were the people who rebelled. With Imperial Pirates, renegades, and Night Lord terror tactics, these men who were already discontent with their new way of living, rose up and challenged their overlords. These people, taking the old name of Jovian Clans, took over nearly half of the present stations on the moon. However, when the heresy ended with the loss of the traitors and the scouring began, the remobilized Adeptus Mechanicus soldiers crushed the Jovian Separatists. The rebels who saw their doom in the micro thermal lances of the AdMech, decided to play their trump card. They possessed many STCs important to the AdMech, and for an agreement on servitude in sovereignty, they offered these STCs to them. It took days for the AdMech to decide, but in the end, they caved in and let the Separatists keep their sovereignty on their moon. This did not mean that they weren’t a part of the Imperium, and they still had to pay the same tax as the rest of Europa, however, they were spared extinction and were allowed to exist as a separate country in Europa.   In the following millenniums, tensions fluctuated between the two Europan factions. From the holy Adepta Sororitas to the corrupted Chaos Cults, both political bodies housed many different aspects of the Imperium. Uncountable wars were waged between the two political bodies, the AdMech only intervening if valuable resources were caught in the crossfire. Borders became as fluid as the oceans that the war submarines sailed in, but somehow both factions survived with relatively equal power and influence to the other.   As the varies factions of Europa fight one another, the general Europan population is unaffected. The most effect is seen by the population at tax seasons when everything’s price rises for a couple of years. The average Europan lives inside relatively small outposts, where the most common jobs are either farming, mining, or factory work. Mining is considered the most dangerous of these three jobs. While as a miner in the deep core, one can get eaten by the megafauna, have dislocated boulders fall on them, hit an unsuspecting crystal spike, run out of fuel, run out of oxygen, or just get lost in general. This is why mining is the second most respected job in Europa.

Geography & Nature

Geography

  • How is the planet layed out:
  • Europa is slightly smaller than the Moon. At just over 3,100 kilometres (1,900 mi) in diameter, it is the sixth-largest moon and fifteenth-largest object in the Solar System. Though by a wide margin the least massive of the Galilean satellites, it is nonetheless more massive than all known moons in the Solar System smaller than itself combined. Its bulk density suggests that it is similar in composition to the terrestrial planets, being primarily composed of silicate rock.   It is estimated that Europa has an outer layer of water around 100 km (62 mi) thick--a part frozen as its crust and a part as a liquid ocean in the equator of the planet. Europa has an induced magnetic field through interaction with Jupiter's. This layer is likely to be a salty liquid-water ocean. Portions of the crust are estimated to have undergone a rotation of nearly 80°, nearly flipping over (see true polar wander), which would be unlikely if the ice were solidly attached to the mantle. Europa contains a metallic iron core.   -Are their ice caps?: Europa has 2 large ice caps   -how many continents are there? Oceans? Lava fields? The most effect is seen by the population at tax seasons when everything’s price rises for a couple of years. The average Europan lives inside relatively small outposts, where the most common jobs are either farming, mining, or factory work. Mining is considered the most dangerous of these three jobs. While as a miner in the deep core, one can get eaten by the megafauna, have dislocated boulders fall on them, hit an unsuspecting crystal spike, run out of fuel, run out of oxygen, or just get lost in general. This is why mining is the second most respected job in Europa.   Submariners   The most respected job in Europa is Submarine work, only because submarine work is mostly more interesting and carries more stories than mining work. -   Submarine work can range from cargo transport to hunter parties. Or if the captain is a free worker, smuggling, and head hunting. Submarine work is also one of the best-paying jobs in Europa, as, without them and their guns, nothing could be transported. However, while stations or outposts are under the same threat from the ocean as any non-ocean planet hive city, submarine workers have to deal with everything that Europa can throw at them. The most common submarines are the transport ones that were sanctioned by the political parties. These submarines can hold thousands of crew and carry an unfathomable amount of supplies. They carry a white signal which means that even in war, both political parties allow them to pass, as they carry light weaponry only and none as cargo. To ensure the carriage of no weapons, both parties are allowed to make routine inspections for the other party's transports. Even after millennia, only a handful of overeager captains have tried to smuggle using these transports, and they were immediately disavowed by their sponsors and executed when their crimes were revealed. Green signal submarines are military subs sanctioned by political parties. These submarines carry around a hundred personnel and soldiers, sacrificing crew space for heavy weapons, ammunition, and armour. Most of these submarines’ time is spent clearing trade paths of pirates, megafauna, and other threats. They can be seen as the PDF of Europa. The red signal submarines are AdMech-sanctioned political and miner ships. No one, not even the craziest pirates get in the way of these ships. Some because they respect the job the miners do and prefer to go for the cargo that other ships will carry, and all because they fear the wrath of their overlords. Unsanctioned subs with freelancer captains are the second most common sight in Europan oceans. These submarines have fewer than 30 personnel, mostly only needing a skeleton crew of 10. With their small size, they can act as fast cargo transports, or small hunting parties to open up quick routes for other cargo transports. While they are the smallest submarines, they can carry nearly the same amount of firepower as a proper military submarine, making them the perfect strike force. However, most of these submarines are used for under-the-nose smuggling, their small size with large enough cargo holds allowing them to go through tighter passageways and dodge any in-planet taxes.     Europan Imperial Guard Units   “Ocean Security Habitability Assessment”   Hard times make harder men, and with the water pressure that Euorpans live under, harder men are difficult to find. The veterans of Europan PDF conscripted into Imperium Guards’ “Ocean Security Habitability Assessment” or O.S.H.A. program. These veterans of ocean warfare are taken to ocean worlds with xenos presence or rebellious activity to support Astra Militarum elements or in some cases even underwater specialist Astartes chapters. The men and women who survive Europan warfare are masters of three-dimensional warfare, making them effective at both space and underwater boarding actions. These soldiers and commanders prefer the usage of plasma weaponry to open up enemy armour or fortifications, then use amphibian heavy transports to enter any hull breach. Teams of ten or twenty move out as separate kill teams, mostly having some Ogryn or shielded support for tight corridors and passageways. OSHA soldiers prefer plasma guns and melta guns over most weaponry as they can be used both as a breaching tool and as a tight area of effect weaponry. Similar to the Death Korps of Krieg, OSHA soldiers can operate at the same capacity as any soldier while they are in heavy-duty diving suits or oxygen masks.   Most OSHA soldiers, including the Europan Guard, have a trophy-taking culture, either coming from piracy or a type of whale hunting. While this kind of behaviour is forbidden for most, the commissars of OSHA mostly look the other away to this activity, both because OSHA soldiers being a semi-elite force, and because they are mostly from planets like Europa and know how trophy-taking boosts morale.   Most veteran OSHA sergeants or captains carry ornate weapons or armour of rebellious nobles, some even having gold or jewelled drinking cups. While most armies have their mottos or anthems, OSHA soldiers have a variety of shanties they chant both in and out of warfare. Because of their multi-cultural composition, the messages and feelings that the shanties give vary, but all of them have a place and time where they shine.
