Molecular Enamel Paste

Quick fix to save a smooth, shiny shell...   As hardy as Richtho plants can be, they will not grow on Planet Thunthen even with special hydroponics facilities. Ritho's Edict prevents the gifts provided Thangiens from being used by their rivals. Rather than sulk bitterly, the clever Dragon-Men have created their own innovations using their knowledge of chemistry and mechanics to treat injuries. In the rare occasions limbs are amputated, mechanical prostheses must be installed, but be it a broken shell spike or crack in the enamel, a spoonful of this gooey substance will make a shell appear good as new. While it cannot fully heal injuries like damaged tissues, it can prove a lifesaver for injured Nobeyls and Khamens.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Its liquid form has a thick consistency almost like cake batter or pudding. When supplemented with calcium and diluted, it has a milky color.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The paste is non-toxic and non-corrosive, but cannot and should not be ingested in its base form unless properly modified, as it can cause suffocation and choking.

Compounds

The paste is formulated to reinforce and replicate existing cells such as keratin, enamel, or bone. Once a framework is established, it stimulates regeneration until gaps are sealed and the injury is fully repaired.

Geology & Geography

Paste must be compounded in a lab with proper equipment and supplies. In Tar's case, he had rudimentary facilities in the Roost and had to have supplies shipped in from the homeworld.

History & Usage

History

Developed in recent millennia as a way to circumvent Ritho's Edict, paste is commonly used to treat injuries on the front line in the rare occasion the Dragon-Men take to the field. None survived the Siege of Bainshaebo to be treated, and the Battle of Banguk took place in a orbital theatre, but Mal Daggur had to employ it by the bucket-full to treat Nobeyls that suffered severe injuries attempting to invade Planet Runjen.

Events of Cataclysm War

Bak Thraplek and his crew suffer severe injuries during their initial engagement with Beastlord and his Menagerie, and large quantities of paste are used in Ch. 4 "The Gargoyle".
Shannon O’Connor held a curled sheet of plastic in one hand and poured in white paste, filling the cone just over half-way. She set the container of liquid on a nearby table then used both hands to hold the cone close to one of Bak Thraplek’s shattered back spikes, tipping the cone up before holding it snugly against the remaining spike stump. She adjusted it slightly to make sure it remained steady then grabbed the tip of the cone and curved it upward slightly to match the curve of Bak’s other spikes. After a few moments she let go of the cone and it remained in place. “This molecular enamel paste of yours is something else, I have to say. It’s almost like medical cement.”   “Yes. As hardy a plant as they are, even Richtho leaves will not grow on the Homeworld. One of Ritho’s edicts. We have had to develop our own medical breakthroughs to compensate, but even our technology has limits,” Bak commented as he surveyed the state of those injured among his crew.   “I wonder if this stuff could be used to treat compound fractures in humans,” Shannon remarked as she prepared another cone for another broken spike.   “I imagine it could, but it might be rather disconcerting for the patient as it would have to be applied directly to the bone. This compound bonds to remaining cells and creates a sort of molecular scaffold upon which new cells are replicated to reconstruct the original form.”   “Oh wow! Yeah that might feel kind of weird!” Shannon chuckled and applied the cone to the broken stump.

Later that night Ronin Leader Ryo of the Wildfire crosses paths with Beastlord's minion Gargoyle and suffers a grievous wound, leaving him on the brink of death. He manages to return to the Roost but is told that his skeleton has deteriorated severely.
“Whatever it was that attacked you, it is as if it tried to disintegrate you from the inside out,” Tar added and pulled the mobile monitor around, displaying an X-ray of Ryo’s chest cavity. “All of your skeleton within a thirteen inch radius of your injury has been severely weakened. We suspect your Armor kept you from bleeding out, and Ruinhuriangoth responded to your distress.”   “Now, Tar was able to create a diluted version of that molecular enamel paste that’s safe to ingest. It’ll piggy-back on your blood stream and make its way to your bone marrow where it’ll get to work reconstructing your bones.” Ryo paused in sipping the concoction and his eyes widened upon the realization he’d been drinking the same stuff the Thunthen used to repair their shells.

Although not intended for internal use, Tar discovers a way to doctor it with calcium and dilute it to make it safe to ingest. However if it were to be used to treat internal injuries in a Thunthen, it would have to be infused with sulfur due to their different physiology.

Everyday use

Can be used to seal cuts and abrasions in shell enamel or completely rebuild broken spikes. The age of the injury does not matter as long as the surface is clean and exposed to facilitate molecular bonding.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Thunthen will use it to easily repair damaged shells, but some might prefer to leave such scars intact out of personal principle such as Bak leaving a shell spike cracked or Mal Daggur leaving all his scars untreated.

Hazards

Paste fully hardens after bonding and becomes indistinguishable from the donor cells, and thus must not be applied unless the usage is intended to be permanent. A careless spilt drop on a shell could result in a bump that looks like a wart or a half-filled cone mold can leave a spike looking crooked.

Distribution

Storage

Sealed canisters when not in use.
Ita Tarmvun used a metal spatula to scoop out dollops of a greenish paste and smear it like icing over cracks in Miz Paufan’s shell. Miz himself lay on his stomach on one of the beds in a heavily medicated daze, drool trickling out of one side of his mouth.

As much as they get picked on and bullied-and on rare occasions shelled-, the sad truth is without this crucial cog in the Thunthen war machine, the Nobeyls would be utterly lost.

“Couldn’t you just give me milk?” Ryo whined and grimaced each time he sipped the fluid. Scratch that, it tasted ten times worse than Richtho tea.   “That would take far too long. You’d have to drink gallons of the stuff to achieve a fraction of the effect. Trust us, this is much faster. You’ll be confined to bed for days instead of months,” Tar insisted.
