Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Cities of the waste are tightly packed small spaces as there is little viable living space and only a specific places can grow food options. This results in population being very dense with family’s having no more than 4 children to a family and sharing a small open plan space with children living with their parents until they themselves get married and have children.   The homes that they have built alongside the similar homes of the other Grym beings are carved out of the natural stone around them and they have utilised the environment around them in the most natural way possible while also maximising the available space for growing things that can be used for food or shelter in any form.

Behaviour

A surly and cynical people who fatalistically expect little more from life than what they have. While they treat their own kind with respect and goodwill, trust is not easily given to anyone from outside their community. They are extremely cautious when contacting anyone from beyond the wastes and all strangers to the community are eyed with suspicion.   Sullen and hard-working they are wholly dedicated to any task to which they set themselves, typically mining, forging and general care for the community. To any outsiders Nerroth Dwed have an overly serious attitude and make for sour company, these qualities make them tireless pursuers of excellence in their metalworking and weapon forging. These attitudes are justified in part by their history causing them to exist and evolve in the harsh environment of the wastes.   Although more serious than most dwarves, Nerroth Dwed exhibit the same insatiable curiosity and craftiness when put in the right circumstances. It is this trait, that has resulted in the recent generation becoming braver and exploring further beyond the wastes than ever before.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The harsh conditions of life in the Wastes effect society in a number of unusual ways. Children are an extremely important aspect, partly due to a low birthrate relative to the mortality rate. Shadow gnome mothers dote on their children obsessively. When they reach adolescence, children are quickly apprenticed to masters in whatever trade they are expected to take on. Most males were miners or forgers, while females were the masters of the community by raising children, keeping the house tidy, caring for the sick or elderly, gathering food, and preparing meals.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

Males are completely bald and beardless, while the females have short messy hair. complexions grey skin with dark grey eyes. Females typically have grey hair.   Nerroth Dwed consider male and female gender roles equally important. Therefore it is not uncommon to see genders working the opposite role.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

As a whole, the Nerroth Dwed are a hard-working and joyless people, but they still require time to relax and let off steam. This often takes the form of heavy drinking and consumption of psychedelic mushrooms but always done in a controlled manner and environment never going to excess just enough to take the edge off. They also enjoy gambling type games and fighting pits whether participating or watching.   Artistically, they tend to use a lot of gemstones, which are relatively common in Grym communities. Nerroth also turned their cultivation of mushrooms for food into a wider industry, developing fungi not only for food but for textiles and wood as well.   Their cuisine is also a reflection of their livelihood, with the common staples made up of a variety of exotic fungi found only in the kings crest. The only animals they have been able to breed and use in the wastes are goats and chicken a lot of their diet includes eggs, chicken or goat. Due to the inconsistency of food they tend to opt for salt curing their meat to preserve it as long as they can.
