Wisp

Wisps are ancient mysterious spirits of nature that once resided within Aeth, and are the disembodied spirits of the deceased that have become one with nature, though their minds and the way they perceive things is very different from life. They are capable of navigating the Border Ethereal much faster than normal spirits.   Wisps are dedicated to the well-being of nature, capable of healing the land and keeping the regions clean and pure. They are connected to the earth and its lands on a supernatural level rivalling that of the Loa. Most believe that Wisps often evolve into mighty ancient protectors and other creatures.   Wisps exist in tight connection with the nature of the lands they died in, and were capable of performing beneficial activities such as the repair and defence of nature. The Wisps act in unison with Druids, Loa and Primal Furies, serving to strengthen the forests - most particularly the Treants, Dryads and Hamadryads. Beckoned by druids, these spirits were capable of animating various trees and expanding themselves into rough-hewn structures of living wood and stone. Thus, in some cultures, they played a major role in creating and repairing natural living wooden structures and forest trees. In addition to healing living wood with their mere touch, they can detonate themselves to release powerful positive energy to banish or kill outsiders, elementals or several kinds of undead.   Most Wisps show little intelligence, free-will or self-interest. They appear to only exist purely to serve the will of nature. Whether this is reality or whether they truly serve the higher powers of nature out of some personal agenda or sense of duty is unclear. A tremendous number of Wisps were destroyed at the end of the Divine War in the Primordial Green's gamble to destroy the Primordials. As a result, they are nowhere near as numerous as before the Divine War, but nevertheless, they play an integral role in the spiritual world of nature.   The glowing ball of light hovers a few feet off the ground. Within the eldritch glow, inside can be seen transluscent features of a humanoid or animalistic face. Wisps are mostly silent except for a low humming sound. Oddly enough, some are able to communicate with mortals through thoughts, or changing the colour of their twinkling iridiscent forms. Some Wisps have the extraordinary ability to encourage the rapid maturation of saplings into trees.   While Wisps are generally friendly in demeanour, they can cause small stings when making physical contact with those they don't like. When truly angered, they can burn people to nothing but charred skeletons or merely ash in a few moments. However, they tend to avoid combat and will flee when attacked if they can. They detonate if ordered to do so, or if they cannot flee.   If pressed, a Wisp may sacrifice itself to seed the sentience of a new Treant or Dryad. It takes decades for the Treant or Dryad to grow to maturity and centuries before it reaches its full potential. Wisps have the ability to safely extract wood from a tree without damaging or harming the plant. This is a slow process, but over the course of a single day, a single wisp can produce about 20 lbs of lumber from a large tree. Wisps also have the capability to mold wood into nearly any form. A wisp can change the shape of up to a 5-foot cube of wood, shifting the wood's dimensions at will. This potent ability allows Wisps to swiftly create structures for druids and those that follow the path of the Primordial Green.

Souls of Nature

It is unclear as to how the afterlife is tied to the Wisps, as it is implied that originally the Mother of Wisps allowed the spirits of animals or those that revere nature to linger on as Wisps in the physical world. Some Wisps are able to indefinetly remain upon Aetheus, while others are drawn into the Etheral PLane. It is further unclear what happens to Wisps when they are destroyed in the physical world, and how this ultimately ties into the continual cycle of life and death within the Spirit of Life.
