The Theocratic Tsarinate of Anga-Volka
In the northern lands of Vangolia, rests Anga-Volka, and their theocratic monarchical kingdom ruled and dominated by a de-facto autocrat known as the Tsar or Tsarina. A royal bloodline blessed by the gods long ago, by an angelic line tracing back to a great angel that faced against the demons unleashed on Vangolia, or its continental land-mass during the Divine War and followed right up until the Cataclysm. They hold the belief that they are the world's last stand from invasion from the Abyss or from the Nine Hells when the devils finally turn their attentions away from the eternal Blood War. Not only this, they believe that they are the last vanguard of the Prime Divinities who know the truth of the matter. The Tsar rules through strict iron will, devotion to faith and the oppression of any dark thought or vice in their kingdom, likened to that of a tyrant.
The theocracy is ruled by the de-facto leader of the ethnic group known as the Angavolkan, known as the Tsar or Tsarina, and their line is chosen from a select group of families that preserve and sanctify the bloodline of their angelic fathers - and practice in forms of incestuous marriage to keep the bloodline pure, or to locate lost bloodlines from the mythic era and unite them together to keep the bloodlines pure. But in keeping with the desire to preserve the bloodlines, the Tsar or Tsarina practice a form of bride-show or groom-show, where they gather the noble but poor men or women of the country and decide upon whom is the most beautiful to become their marital partner, protecting them from the influence of foreign princes or princesses. They have the power to pass laws as they see fit and choose, and rule over the frigid lands of Anga-Volka wherever the great snow touches and the glacial rivers flow from the mountains in the north of Vangolia. Their true purpose is the protect their people from the barbarism and fiendish influences of the continent, in near constant warfare, as well as continue the legacy of the Tsars and Tsarina's before them to sacrifice themselves to ensure that the Demons or Devils do not break free from this land and possess the souls of the divine lineages. The heir apparent of the Tsar or Tsarina is known as the Tsaerevich, and is the first-born, of which is raised not under the royal household but under the guidance and tutelage of the Dauntless Church.
Within the Tsarinate, the most important principles of Anga-Volkan society is faith, community and laboriousness. The greater dedication one has to be a patriot and a faithful servant of the Gods, one has the potential to rise through society - though there are qualms of economic differences between the rich and poor, in the eyes of the Anga-Volkan even the Gray Pontiff and the poorest pauper are considered equals. They are all part of the same world, and are all the children of the gods - thus the people are charitable, and seek to uplift those in dire straits. They believe that they are descendants of the angels, and are thus the 'chosen people' of the gods to mark their place upon the world and spread their influence. The Anga-Volkan's are set to accomplish the divine mission of preserving the balance of good in the world, but also to ensure that the greater good prevails above all. As the angels are their ancestors, they believe that they are constantly watched over by their heavenly spirits, helping guide their actions in order to fulfil their grand purpose. It is their mission to defeat and end both barbarism within Vangolia, reclaim the land of Vangolia as a site of a battle between the gods and the Primordials, and permanently seal the Black Gate. For those that display undesired traits of laziness, cowardice & free thought, it is considered taboo and rude amongst their group.
The Anga-Volkan's have been forced to be a self-sufficient economy. Weapons, armour, tools and engineering are all produced within their forges and workshops. Specialist goods are traded between the snow-capped lands, across the mountains along the Pilgrim Passages and into the frigid coastlines of Anga-Volka through the Permafrost Highways, and through the icy waters of the glacial rivers. Caravans are protected by the stalwart defenders of the Church and across the lands through the aid of ranger groups. They are adept and acclimated to the harsh wintery conditions of the land, rangers and paladins are tasked with keeping the peace between the wildlands and ensuring no barbarian raiders or fiendish monstrosity breaks through the march-lands, ensuring that settlements and trade ways are safe and traversable in spite of the cold climate and beasts of the land. Goods that the Anga-Volkan's cannot produce themselves are often traded and imported from other countries, but this is an unreliable means of trade, due to the accessibility to Anga-Volkan harbours & proximity to the Arkspire Covenant and distance between the continents. The human kingdoms of Lorthal & the vast trade network of Ankh'hera ply and trade their goods within the eastern coasts. However, the western-most regions face a scarcity of resources in terms of goods and are barred by natural barriers and the lengths of the trade ways between them. Most Anga-Volkan's are appreciative of foreign trade, but find this demeaning, as they believe the land of the chosen shall provide all that is needed for their civilisation to survive. A test of the gods, so the Church says. It became clear that other countries were capable of producing a greater amount of grain and food than what is capable of harvesting within the frosty grounds of Anga-Volkan farmland. Bereft of a reliable and consistent amount of provisionary crops and foodstuffs, trading is the only means by which individuals can survive potential starvation in the face of repeated famine. But such predicaments are not always true, for there are still plenty of Anga-Volkan's that subsist through hunting and gathering natural resources that garner great standing within society. The most brazen and opportunistic venture beyond the amicable safety of Anga-Volkan territories to harvest and hunt within the south, where the dangers of becoming prey to the large beasts, barbarous tribes and potential fiendish inhabitants are prominent. Most Anga-Volkans regard trading as a troublesome and potentially corrupt profession, due to the possibilities of selfish greed and gluttony that pertains to those who hold greater resources over those less fortunate than they, more so in grain than in gold or commodities. But it is a necessary condition of a prosperous and growing society. But this is not necessarily true in every instance, most merchants that are faithful to the Church that make good standing and profit under this instance provide charitable donations and alms to the church in times of hardship and are humble in their stations. Most outsiders believe that provisioning such a large territory and kingdom with ample supplies of food and crop are drastically problematic and filled with unfortunate circumstances, but the Anga-Volkan's are anything if not resourceful and hardy people. The northern coastline is fortunate to subsist with a tradition of fishing vessels and whalers, garnering a plethora of shellfish, great marine animals and large fish species. Though the highlands to the north-west and eastern hinterlands are usually barren, unfit for both arable farming and pasture. Across the majority of the north, the grounds are thick with snow and permafrost, with a great sparseness of vegetation and arable land - but have been able to harvest a hardy group of potatoes and beetroot that forms a staple diet of the region. The greatest exports to which Anga-Volka has is its consecrated holy water, cold-iron reserves within the north-western mountains, ironwood, oriental armaments and armour, as well as cloth and silk.
The religious fervour of the Dauntless Church began with the martyrdom of the great angel, Vandrael, who was believed to have sealed the Abyssal gate hidden amongst Vangolia and sacrificed himself in fighting the legions of the Abyss in order to save the world. His legend and his dedication is passed on to this day, and that through sealing the doorway, he left behind an immortal guardian - but one who would spell great destruction and the end of civilisation itself. Should the Beast of the Gates be awakened, it would spell ruin and death for the Anga-Volka, but it would also mean the destruction of the barbarians and orcs of the south in one fell swoop. Once all blood and life have been spilt from the continent, it is said that the beast would enter deep sleep, and rest until the world falls to dust. The Anga-Volkans worship primarily the Prime Deities, but not the aspects in which show them as the Creators, but rather their other titles. They recognise and pay fealty to the Season Riders, but they only see them as being extensions of the worship of Melora, the Wildmother - and pays homage to them during each of the solstice and equinox dates of the year. Of the deities in which the Dauntless Church recognise, these are the deities that the Anga-Volkans pay fealty to:
GOVERNMENT & POLITICS
The theocracy is ruled by the de-facto leader of the ethnic group known as the Angavolkan, known as the Tsar or Tsarina, and their line is chosen from a select group of families that preserve and sanctify the bloodline of their angelic fathers - and practice in forms of incestuous marriage to keep the bloodline pure, or to locate lost bloodlines from the mythic era and unite them together to keep the bloodlines pure. The heir apparent of the Tsar or Tsarina is known as the Tsaerevich, and is the first-born, of which is raised not under the royal household but under the guidance and tutelage of the Dauntless Church.
THE ROYAL COUNCIL & THE DUMA
The Royal Council, otherwise known as the Sobraniye (The Congregation), are made up of five or six hand-picked and powerful Boyars that acted only as advisors and confidantes, much like a body of ministers whose sole purpose was to implement the will of the Tsar upon their lands and their subjects. They could be appointed and dismissed at the Tsars pleasure, and were not always drawn on the basis of merit, achievement, nor their accountability to the people. In exchange, they were allowed a degree of autonomy in their regions. Their purpose was to ensure that only matters of great importance reach the ear of the Tsar, so as to avoid the overwhelming considerations of all their subjects at once. The most powerful of individuals within the Sobraniye, was the Prime Boyar (Rodnoy Brat - the Brother), whom was the closest and most trusted of the Boyars to the Tsar, and held a limited power to be able to appoint and dismiss the positions of power within the landed Boyars and Grafs - keeping them in a constant state of rivalry. The other Boyars were known as:- The Oklonichy of Foreign Affairs, the 'the Rhetor' (the Orator). This position was the most precarious of the Sobraniye, as many suspects that they are coerced or manipulated by other secular nations and kingdoms that do not follow their way - but is reputed to be one of the sternest and resolute, who takes care to plan and plot the expansion and alliances outside of the Tsarinate.
- The Oklonichy of the Treasury, the 'Gonchaya' (the Hound). This position was largely hated among all the Sobraniye, and the most difficult of positions to keep - as the expenditure and collection of taxes earn the great ire of the people, as well as the scrutiny of the Church. But it affords a powerful seat, with the ability to wield and utilise the Seal of Anga-Volka, the symbol of its people and the Tsar themself.
- The Oklonichy of Justice, 'the Vykuplen' (the Redeemed). At most points, the Vykuplen is often associated or affiliated with the powers of the Church - and is despised in certain ways for implementing the justice of the Tsar and the Church in order to keep power. They ensure that the laws are implemented, and all favour the power of the Tsar. Keeping records and implements the issue of the Tsar's will to all people of the land. Noteworthy for the discrimination and prejudice of Tieflings, Minotaur and beast folk.
- The Oklonichy of Agriculture, 'the Rezhisser' (the Producer). The second most beloved position of all the Oklonichy, and issues the passing of surplus grain to the people as a whole, and is charged with maintaining the Tsarinates supply of food, provisions and acts as a voice of the common folk. Many envisage the Rezhisser as the champion of the people and giver of many gifts.
- The Oklonichy of Defence, 'the Konservator' (the Conservator). The most distinguished and qualified of the Oklonichy, of whom is in charge of raising and retaining the armies of the Tsar, as well as maintaining the defences of its borders and most predominantly, the great wall that divides the southern barbarians from the lands of Anga-Volka.
THE BOYARS & GRAFS
Beneath the Tsaerevich, are the highest of the angelic-blooded nobility, known as the Boyars (the same rank and title as a Lord), or 'free men', 'men of battle'. As dictated by the complicated feudal hierarchy of Anga-Volka, known as the Holy Positions (Mestnichestvo), based on the individual seniority of an extended aristocratic family on one hand, and on the order of precedence of the families on the other. Under this system, one cannot be made Boyar, unless someone else in their family held this position. Most visibly seen by the positions held at the Tsar's table. Each Boyar was supported by a retinue (druzhina) of loyal soldiers (druzhinniks), or can draft more followers and zealots with the aid of the Church. The highest rank of Boyar are known as the Oklonichy ("Close to the Tsar"), whose duties included arranging teh tavel and quarter of the Tsar, as well as accomodating foreign ambassadors and presenting them to court. Other duties involved being a head of state, or a regiment, being ambassadors or a member of the Duma. There were two different types of Boyar: the ancestral Boyar (Deva-Boyat), who trace their ancestry from their angelic bloodlines (who reside as the higher nobility), and the landed Boyar (Boyar-tar), those whose lands were ancestrally tied to the angels trusted companions and advisors (who reside as a lower nobility). They are defined by three things: being a land-owner, having serfs, and having a military and/or administrative function. The Tsar or Tsaerevich could give land to the Boyars, but they could not grant land that was possessed by a landed Boyar, except for serious reasons such as treason or heresy. They once held a prominent advisory role to the Tsar or the Tsaerevich, but their power has been mostly absorbed by the Dauntless Church, and are thus held to be non-constitutional leaders and military advisors that control regions for the Tsar, rewarded for their services and dedication, and kept the landed commoners within their territories and immobile across the regions. The Boyars were made distinct by the Three Privileges, which gave noble privileges, but also were defined by physical privileges in dress and appearance: Boyars of the First Privilege, held the right to be part of the Tsar's court, but also held the right to grow beards. Boyars of the Second Privilege held the right to call a draft of warriors from their own territories in service of the Church or Tsar but also held the right to grow moustaches. Boyars of the Third Privilege held the right to grow thick sideburns. Beneath the Boyars are the land-owning class of minor nobles known as the Grafs (the same rank and title as a Count). Each Graf holds a position denoting their rank in the social order, being considered the lesser of the nobility, and their names reflect the lands in which they rule. Each Graf must provide taxes, military retinue or drafted conscripts and annual contributions of grain and food for the Tsar and the Boyars.- Markgraf (March, or border province, and graf, who exercised authority over territory on the borders of the Tsarinate - vulnerable to foreign attack, and thus granted greater authority to ensure security)
- Landgraf (Land, or country, and Graf, who exercised authority over an entire lot of land)
- Burggraf (Castle or burgh, and Graf, who ruled territory surrounding or dominated by a fortified castle)
- Altgraf (Old and Graf, a title which denotes a unique position among the Grafs as an extended noble line of Grafs)
- Waldgraf (Forest and Graf, who ruled a heavily forested area)
- Raugraf (Raw, uninhabited, wilderness and Graf, who ruled territory centred on an undeveloped area of land - usually among the mountains or rough terrain)
- Zendgraaf (meaning 'Sent Graf', who is an envoy or 'palace inspector' to supervise the other Grafs of the land, appointed annually alongside a holy representative of the Church)
- Vizegraf (Vice or substitute and Graf, the firstborn or heir to a Graf)
THE DAUNTLESS CHURCH
Besides the Tsarina, who leads the military and the order of its civilisation - there is the Dauntless Church, whose all-encompassing influence controls the populace, its administration, its religion and its laws. The Dauntless Church is led by a tripartite of prominent religious leaders - the Father in Black, the Mother in White & the Gray Pontiff. As is their duty, they put the sanctity of their people's virtue first and institute a social hierarchy against those they believe transgress against their ancient traditions and values, punishing those that commit crimes against the gods over life and death - and limit the potential and spread of arcane power among their people.- The Father in Black is one that is the scion and champion of the gods of death, between the Raven Queen and Null the Stillborn Godling - he is the judge, jury and executioner of the Dauntless Church's law, and maintains its purity and sanctity. Traditionally, the Father in Black holds a position as a grandmaster paladin of the Order of Venerable Spirit.
- The Mother in White is one that is the scion and champion of the gods of life and order, between Erathis the Lawbearer & Pelor the Dawnfather - she is the one who issues peace, order and tranquillity and harmony between the worshippers of the Dauntless Church. She protects the bloodlines, trains the new generations to be taught to fear evil and to destroy it wherever it lies. Traditionally, the Mother in White holds the position of an archpriest of the gods in a polytheistic fashion but venerates a chosen and representative of a patron deity.
- The Gray Pontiff is the one who protects the faith, receives divine messages from the gods, guides the laity with faith and discipline, preserves the balance within the Church and ensures that they stay in power among the nobility. He is the direct successor of the angels and thus the gods, tied with the Holy See within the lands of Anga-Volka.
- Archbishop - they hold holy rule and jurisdiction over territory, known as an archdiocese, and usually are part of and are based within a metropolis (city). They hold higher positions and authority than the noble Grafs of the land. The Archbishops are few in number and are only represented under the urban regions of the Tsarinate. They hold sway and authority over all bishops within the localities and maintain the services of the masses during great ceremonies and holidays.
- Bishop - they hold holy rule and jurisdiction over territory, known as a bishopric. These titles usually come with land and property ownership over a temple, shrine or religious building or site; these bishops maintain these sites and manage the surrounding locality to observe the holy laws under the Dauntless Church and teach the populace their ways and traditions.
- Priest - they do not hold rule or jurisdiction over any territory, rather they observe and practice the holy ceremonies and rituals under a particular god.
- Laity (The People) - these are the common people who owe fealty to the Tsar and worship under the Dauntless Church.
SOCIETY
Within the Tsarinate, the most important principles of Anga-Volkan society is faith, community and laboriousness. The greater dedication one has to be a patriot and a faithful servant of the Gods, one has the potential to rise through society - though there are qualms of economic differences between the rich and poor, in the eyes of the Anga-Volkan even the Gray Pontiff and the poorest pauper are considered equals. - Promethea the Strife Mother
- Romeus the Heart Martyr
- The Raven Queen
- Melora the Wild Mother
- Boreus the Winter Sage
- Eostara the Spring Child
- Freya the Summer Maiden
- Vernoron the Harvest Lord
- Null the Stillborn Godling
MILITARY
PERILS:
- The flash-frosts and harsh long and cold winters, short summers and short growth-period.
- Hungry winter predators at night.
- Longer days and longer nights during the periods of the year.
- Keeping warm.
- Border threat with Blightholme, the Minotaurs, the Feral Tiefling barbarians, the Orcs and Gnolls.
- Demonic possession and dark spirits.
- Iron-fist rule threatens the freedoms of the people but keeps them safe - tyranny.
- Hard storms. Difficulty fishing and stocking up enough food for the long winters.
- Population growth, indoctrination/ keeping faith and keeping everyone safe within the walls of the land.
- The breaking of the divine wall (separating the Blightholme from Anga-Volka)
- Undeath, disease (from the cold winters) and pest-infestations seeking warmth in the winter.
- Building their ancient grounds and city over the remains of a crashed and largely unknown flying magocracy.
RESPONSE TO PERILS:
- Keeping warm, keeping active (if you die in the cold, you weren't doing your duty to your fullest)
- Keeping close to walled fortifications, not wandering out too far from the civilisation, otherwise, be caught in the wilderness and attacked by predators.
- Longer days (the Festival of Light: a short 2-3 month period of growth in the lands, the time of harvest and the time of prosperity - the Festival of Darkness: long 6-8 month period that tests the wills and fortitudes of those that live in the region; threatened by multiple conflicts and dangers)
- Hunting wild beasts for their pelts, but also summoning divine light and will, having well-stocked fireplaces, bonfires and open halls shared by others to bask in the heat. Giving routine purges.
- Facing off against these threats - they do not trust anyone who does not hold faith in the system, in their ruler or their people. With the threat of Blightholme spreading its corruption in the land, though halted by the hoarfrost, the Anga-Volkan's have prepared bountiful and blessed icons and artefacts deep within the mountains and in pools and lands (blessed scarecrows?), to sanctify and produce flowing streams of holy water, which proves caustic against the Blightholme and corruption of the abyss - but they usually prohibit citizens travelling that close to the lands, and any that have been found corrupted are quarantined and usually imprisoned away from society. Against the Minotaur, they believe that they are demon-worshippers of Baphomet, despite their defeat by Erathis - any they meet and allow to live, they castrate them and take away their horns, dishonouring them and their clans. Earning their ire, but making their point clear and cruel. They are nothing but beast-men. Against the Feral Tiefling's - they protect themselves from evil, and from demonic possession, rooting out evils and destroying their dark idols and shrines upon the lands. Executing them without quarrel. Against the Gnolls, they keep stock of their herds and people, not to venture too close to the south or any further beyond Blightholme - the Orcs come periodically, making desperate raids when necessary.
- Spreading chaos and corruption across the land, tainting the goodwill of others - bringing oathbreakers. They deal with this by blocking off sections of the community and going to purge the sector - reaping devastation, and cordoning off sections of the city, nothing is to be spared. Usually giving rise to pogroms or sanctified purges in the area against malignant forces. "Keeping the peace", so you might say.
- The preservation of the bloodlines.
JOYS:
- Enjoying the bounty of the Summer season - the longer daylight hours.
- Telling calming stories and cautionary tales to the children.
- Being blessed by the Dauntless Church - given gifts of office, blessings and sanctity to their buildings for devotion and service to their country.
- National pride and devotion when the Tsarina comes.
- Times of religious festivals.
- The consecration and baptism of the children, coming-of-age tales, taking pride in the youth. Modest courtships and political marriages.
- Receiving new life - making pilgrimages to the great glacier and the volcanic shrine in the Mor'Goron Mountains.
PRODUCTS:
- Ice
- Salt
- Furs, Hides, Traps, Hunting equipment, Weapons.
- Ironwood - Cold Iron from the northern mountain mines (so cold it can potentially shatter normal iron weaponry)
- Faith - Holy Water - Divine magic and weaponry - blessed armour and weapons, arrows. Holy talismans, relics and artefacts. Divine light and heavenly grace. Spiritual guardians. Hallowed grounds. Light.
- Holy Spirits (alcohol) and tithes.
- Anga-Volkan hymns, poetry, sonnets, holy prayers and scripture.
- Blessed Silvered weaponry against monstrous creatures.
HOPES:
- To cure the cursed corruption of Blightholme, and resurrect the lands around it.
- To conquer the south and destroy the heretics, sinners and demons and devils that pervert the land saved by their holy angel.
- To retrieve the lost artefacts of their saints, holy warriors and reclaim the Abyssal Gate conquered by the Minotaurs.
- To promote the great worship of the Prime Divinities, and destroy all that worship the unworthy and the demonic princes, archdevils and dark powers.
- To rebuild the city of Venatori and bring it to power with divine light, in order to create the first flying cathedral citadel.
- To bring those that damned their souls to their rightful place in Hell or in the Abyss.
