Lament (La-ment)
"I, the commander, wield an oath."
Lament is the Commander's sword of the Varcanai Guard, as gifted by the Prince of Aethel Caeloria and blessed by the reigning sovereign. It is the first time in Aethel Caelorian history that a commander has an intricately forged sword. Lament will be passed down to each successor.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Lament: The wielder of this arming sword is the Commander of the Varcanai Guard. Lament is a broadsword with a blade of black steel. The distinct features about it are the rainguard and the fuller.
Sword Components:
- Pommel: A thin peened ring pommel with leaf embellishments carved around it.
- Grip: The grip had two layers to it. The first was a smooth black leather that covered the hilt to the rainguard, and the second layer was a thin, flat, leather braided cord wrapped around the bottom of the lower part of the handle to the top.
- Crossguard: Curved with leaf engravings throughout the saer crossguard.
- Rainguard: Took the form of a saer Aegean head.
- Blade: Smooth black steel with a slight glimmer. The blade maintained saer branch engravings along the edges giving it an aesthetic appearance.
- Fuller: A diamond fuller with the phrase, "I, the Commander, wield an oath" inscribed in the Old Tongue, L'aiavanto.
- Edge: Double-edged
- Central Ridge: A thin line running from the fuller tip to the centre of the blade's point.
- Point: It has a spear point.
- Scabbard: Ebony scabbard.
Significance
The significance of Lament is that its wielder, Linthuwai Aalarelai, must upkeep his promise to his cousin, Vaeril, thus becoming the best elf that he can be for both his kin and for the citizens of Aethel Caeloria. As the commander, he is now a role model to many, especially elflings and young elves; therefore, his actions are paramount to the kingdom's reputation. He made an oath to everyone and himself that he would do everything he could to protect them and be the elf they could confidently confide in when times became dire. That is his oath.
Lament: Lament is the weapon of the Commander of the Varcanai Guard. It signifies his authority over the army and represents the oath made to himself and the citizens he protects. It is passed down from commander to commander.
Lament is the first sword forged for a commander within Aethel Caelorian history. It was initially made for Linthuwai Aalarelai to help him take his role as Commander more seriously and step up to the newfound responsibility he was to face.
"I, the Commander, wield an oath." This is a promise the Commander of the Varcanai Guard, Linthuwai Aalarelai, made to himself and the citizens of Aethel Caeloria. The sword would be used to keep everyone safe from harm, stranger and friend alike, and the wielder would be either selfless or merciless in his duties where necessary. That is his oath.

Lament is the only one of its kind, having been the first one to be made in existence for a commander; however, it is identical to another sword, titled Eclipse. While its value is still to be considered, it is still valuable given that it is the official sword of a high-ranking commander.
