Saxon Wars
The war between the Franks and Saxons have been ongoing since 772. Widukind is the King of Saxony, and under-resourced.
The sacking and burning of Deventer was the start of the war. A group, the Engrians, was attacked in response to this and their sacred symbol Irminsul (a tree that seemed to represent Yggdrasil) near Paderborn was destroyed.
Constant attacks have been going back and forth along with the destruction of holy sites, settlements and fortresses. In many cases this also seems to be partly religious in nature. The Saxons are pagan, and the Franks are Christian. The harsh laws enforced by the Franks helps stir up conflict on captured Saxon land.
At present the Saxons are loosing due to the larger and better equipped Frankish army. The Roman Catholic Church is also aiding the Franks too, with forcing religious changes on the Saxon. The Saxons are also starting to loose much needed resources and having difficulty replenishing troops, getting food and weapons & armour.
