Cloak of Darkest Night
The Cloak of Darkest Night is an ancient artifact. Legends persist that the Cloak lies far to the north in a ruined city brought low by a severe winter storm. There it sits in a vault awaiting it's discovery.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Black Shadar-Kai wool / linen composite, and Kenku feathers. Since it was made in the presence of the Raven Queen, it has absorbed some of the concentrated power of the Shadowfell. Doing so, it borders the dimensional walls betwen it and the Material Plane.
History
The Cloak of Darkest Night is an artifact created in the early annals of the Shadar-Kai. Renowned for using darkness & shadow as a weapon in of itself, the Cloak represents this in all manners. Nade from clloth and the feathers of Kenku who angered the Raven Wueen it was spun from cloth in her court, and dyed with the darkest of shadow, while the Kenku feathers were stitched in.
The Cloak itself is relatively light to wear and completely ecapsulates the wearer, and was worn as a mark of the Raven Queen's executioner & master assassin. Worn by many over the years it eventually found it's way into the Material Plane. The Shadar-Kai that wore it had been trasked with killing the ruling council of a Black Elf city far to the north in the Scandes. Unfortunately a group of recently settled Kenku had found through their kin of the assassin and let the council know. When the assassin arrived he was taken prisoner, stripped partially flayed and bound to a rock outside the city to suffer the horrendous winter conditions.
After this incident, the Black Elves rarely used it if at all, instead keeping it as a prize in a sectet vault in their treasury.
Lying for years, the city suffered a catastrophe as the ancient dragon Birgin the Winter Storm and his Kobold minions attacked. The Black Elves done all they could to stave off the attack but it was to no avail. The city fell and most of it has been under Kobold control for centuries now. They may be exceptionally good at traps, the Kobolds just couldn't get deep into the treasury. Lifting a good half the treasure there, they couldn't get deep enough into it. With the damage to the city and the danger to themselves made them back off. After a while they forgot about it, and Birgin was happy with the treasures he did get. If they could get the rest he'd be even happier but such is the nature of such minions, and if he wiped them out for not getting the rest, then he'd have to get others.
So now, the Cloak sits waiting to be rediscovered, and handed back to theShadar-Kai.
Significance
A Shadar-Kai relic, it is a sign that the wearer is in the Raven Queen's favour.
