Greater Penea

Greater Penea, or Penea as it is often referred to as is a collection of tribes situated on the west coast of Eadroch consisting of vast grasslands, scorching wastes, overgrown swamps and rich rivers. The people who encompass Greater Penea have vastlt different customs and traditions from all the other tribes. Yet all of them are very proud of their heritage and see all within their tribe as family, owing each other great loyalty. Penea consists of five major tribes that are situated in different regions geographically throughout Penea. Within those tribes they are further divided into families. Families generally have their own encampments and settlements within their mother tribe's land. Despite being called families, however, they are not all related by blood. Outsiders to Penea have been known to join with families in the past.

Regions

Hakra

Known as the plains of Penea, this is where the majority of Penean people hail from. The plains are vast and cover over 60% of Penea and you will find many small and large settlements scattered throughout. Many of the settlements rely on hunters and gatherers for food sources, while those that are situated by rivers will fish. The people of the Hakra tribe tend to be of different persuasions to outsiders depending on where you go. Those that are deep within the plains may be very mistrusting of other families while those along the larger trade routes often work with all kinds of people, making a name as traders themselves.

Schorfra

This tribe makes its home in the northeastern wastelands known as the scorched plains, or often called The Scorch. It is known as this because it sometimes grows so hot in the summers and so dry that sometimes the plains and forests will catch alight causing fires that stretch for some time. In this wasteland are the most hardened of the tribes. In the past, the Schorfra tribe have been highly militaristic, raiding other tribes in both Penea and Orikar for resources and slaves to work the lands. Now, however the Schorfra tribe is quite small as many have moved to other regions due to their way of life being unsustainable in their rapidly advancing society.

Sunne

The Sunne tribe encompasses the southeastern part of Penea, just south of the swamps, also stretching along the length of the entire Sun river to the coast. The people of this tribe live in what is considered the most fertile region of Penea. Many of the inhabitants make a living farming the lands around the river and raising cattle. As such, the Sunne tribe throughout history has been seen as the most prosperous of the tribes, their riches in the past being coveted by the others. Now, Sunne provides for the majority of the needs of food throughout the Penean region.

Plunne

A very mysterious tribe situated near the mountains of Fazeen within the swamps. This tribe thrives in the flooded plains to the east of Penea. The people here are known to wield strange types of magic unlike others and are able to speak to the animals and wildlife of their home. They have learned how to thrive and make their wooden homes on the lakes. This power is often feared by the other tribes and often ostracized. As such, they tend to keep to themselves, rarely venturing outside their own tribe, for fear of persecution. In the past, the Plunne tribe has had attempted raids by others, yet they all fail, the raiders being unable to navigate the treacherous swamps as the Plunne do.

Killik

Perhaps the most outlandish of all the Penean tribes, these people make their home not in the plains or fields themselves, but deep underneath in the vast tunnel systems underneath the southern region of Penea. The Killik tribe have adapted to a way of living in the caves, avoiding the hot sun and surviving off of the surprisingly abundant plant life underground. The tunnels they live in and carve out are vast. Thought to be limited to the southern tip of Penea in the past, entrances to these systems have been found all the way into Orikr and Fazeen.

Naming Customs

It is customary for people of Penea to have three names: one being a designated first name, the second being their family name and their last name being of the tribe from whence they hail. As for first names, Penean people tend to adopt a french naming standard. Others may sometimes be referred to their job within their family or tribe such as Hunter or Smith. Family names will tend to only be used for people when they are within their own tribe. Those that travel away from their tribe or to other lands will refer to themselves with their first name and tribe name.   While family names can follow any standard, tribal names follow a certain convention. An example name would be "Odilon du'Hakra"; Odilon being the first name and du'Hakra representing the tribe he is from. The "du'" means "of" in Penean and Hakra is the name of the tribe, meaning "fields". Other surnames would be du'Schorfra, du'Sunne etc.
