Tower of the Forgotten King
Before the elves arrived in the material plane, there were kingdoms and minor powers dotted throughout the land of Aesteria. When the Elves finished their civil conflicts and established their empire, these dozens of lords and nobles would eventually be usurped for the grand empire of the elves. In an effort to keep their newly crafted thrones, the lords who truly resisted them would be entirely wiped away - forgotten by time. Only the lords who would allow themselves to be subjects of the empire, or who the elves found too difficult to fully assimilate would retain titles - such as in the eastern lands of man.
In the swamps of the Dead Witch, a thriving keep and tower would be among the first in open resistance to the oncoming empire. The Lord or lady is said to have resisted for longer than thought expected. At the centre of the keep is a grand tower, said to contain the sorcerer Lord of the keep. It's believed the mage was incredibly powerful and commanded much to the area around to attack at imperial forces.
But the Lord of the keep would fall to Elven cunning, a group of elves would disguise themselves and infiltrate the fort - and though they died, they mortally wounded the Lord first.
The Pale Elves would use the tower as a stopping point and watch tower into the north. The empire had little territory in western Aesteria bar military forts and logging villages, the tower was seemingly for other purposes. The keep is built into an island on the eastern half of the Dead witch swamp. Surrounded by deep water and mud, it's incredibly hard to enter without using its only bridge. Built out of ancient and mossy stone, it's said to be just as much part of the swamp as the very grass and mud. It, strangely, wasn't rebuilt by the elves in anyway despite the empire claiming it - and lacks any of the beige pale Elf stone in its construction even after the siege. Rumours claim that the elves found the original stonemasons and had them rebuild the fort as it had been originally.
