Nephronas

The Nephronas are a race of humanoid Depth dwellers. Their culture involves trade across the various layers of the Depths. They align themselves with whoever they trade with and are regarded as friendly by many of the more civilized Depth dwelling races.

Biology

The average Nephrona bears a great resemblance to a very hairy human with floppy ears and a wide head.
Size
The length of a typical Nephrona can vary from 3.5 ft to nearly 8 ft, it all depends on how much they ate during childhood. They are either small or medium. Their bodies do not scale proportionally, like most humanoids the heads are all roughly the same size but unlike other humanoids their torsos also do not scale proportionally. This results in the taller ones having very long limbs.
Age
The average Nephrona can physically be considered an adult at 13 years old but would often stay with their extended family until they were mentally considered an adult. The family decided when one would be considered mentally old enough to be an adult. This usually was somewhere during their 20s. The Nephronas have an average life expectancy of 110 but can vary from 70 to 170, depending on how well they eat.
Unusual metabolism
A Nephrona has a much greater appetite than the humanoid races but also greater bodily reserves. They require twice the daily amount to function optimally but can go thrice as long without food as other humanoids before negative effects start to present themselves. Their enhanced dietary requirements do mean that they can eat things normal humanoids can't stomach anymore. They have advantage on saving throws against poison and disease from food and can eat food that Humans would consider too spoiled for themselves but still fit for the pigs.

Culture

Food is the center of the Nephrona culture. They traverse the Depths in search of new kinds of food. Their unusual appetite has also made them exceptional hunters. Whenever the Nephronas visit other cultures they usually end up cooking at least a dozen different meals for their hosts and the hosts usually love having the Nephronas as their cooks. In some cases a Nephrona would be captured or bought by royalty to serve as their royal cook. However, the strong desire of the Nephrona to experience different kinds of food meant they were difficult to keep satisfied in one particular place with one particular culture.
The Nephronas have one major settlement called "The Great Loop". This town was located along a shaft many miles deep that connected all three layers of the Depths. It is THE place where the cuisines of different Depth cultures met.
