Arethian-Éadromian war
The Arethian-Éadromian war, also known as "the war that never was", was a political statement created by King Arthanios, son of Arthanios the Jolly, and the Éadromian council. The conflict started after the razing of Comaoin by a disgruntled Arethian noble. The war ended before having officially begun, earning it the nickname "the war that never was".
Comaoin was situated between Iterian and the rest of the Arethian empire in the north. When Iterian grew so did its need for supplies and trade. Most supplies came over sea but the seas were rough during certain times of year meaning the long journey was difficult to time. This meant Iterian had to go without certain goods from time to time. As demand during these times rose, so did the courage of seaborn merchants looking to make the best of profits. They stuck close to coast, but not too close. On multiple occasions bad weather forced the sailors to go up the Camaoin river for safety. The Elves in that region did not take this well. The Elves tried the diplomatic approach but given that the merchants weren't bound by political agreements, the Elves were left to their own solutions. The unfortunate sailors that sailed up the Comaoin river found themselves captured by the Elves and peacefully returned to the human lands but their ships were sank and their cargo seized. This was sort of fine until the Elves sank a vessel that was on diplomatic mission. Once the Arethian noble returned to the Arethian lands he vowed to enact revenge. King Arthanios, son of Arthanios the Jolly, tried to remedy the issue with diplomacy. However, the Wood Elves of Camaoin weren't so familiar with the privileges of nobility and claimed that the noble, just like any other human, was found to have broken the agreement and thus no apologies or compensations would be issued. King Arthanios agreed that the noble could seek compensation on his own without interference from the greater Arethian empire. The noble made an agreement with a large Goblin tribe living in the Crags. The Goblins were to raid the woods so the Elves would move their attention away from the river. Then, during the time of year that was safest to sail, when no ships would go up the river, the noble led a fleet of seven ships up the river and torched the city of Comaoin along with its unsuspecting citizens. When King Arthanios heard of the conflict he knew this meant a bigger war. In his wisdom King Arthanios decided to end the war before it even began with a show of force. He marched two armies up the coast to Iterian, accompanied by dozens of warships that sailed close to the coast. The Arethian armies had reached the northern end of the Rivulet woods (the same woods Comaoin was part of) before Éadrom even had the chance to dispatch an official declaration of war. King Arthanios met with the Éadromian council in person to discuss the terms of peace and they agreed even before the official declaration of war had arrived at Arethas, capital of the Arethian empire. Thus the war that never was came to an end.
