Arvensis

A farming town in the Flatlands, an extension to the spellfarming production

Special thanks to Rosana Dos Santos Pinto for creating this settlement

Introduction

"The sweet smell of my hometown. Ah.. Never would I forget it. This is why I fight."
— a Paladin of the Order of Tiamat's Knights

Arvensis is the largest farming town in the Kingdom of Archana, taking the mantle after Grave's Hollow was destroyed and expanding on the Wood Elves's technique of Spellfarming. The settlement is known for its fresh air of mint and lavender coming the the natural flora and the plantations surrounding the town.

Demographics

As expected from the natural environment, elves are found, proportionately, in larger number than in most other settlements, being second only to the Springdrop Sanctuary. This is also due to many elves wanting to expand their spellfarming businesses, and the lack of trees in the Flatlands proved it a good place for that. Humans fill the remaining spots in the local population, as dwarves are as rare in a farm as elves are in the cities.

Government

Even though Arvensis is shown as a major settlement in Archana's map, it is actually under the jurisdiction of Blackbourne like the rest of the Flatlands. But as the town has grown big enough, a Mayor serves as the local manager for smaller matters that the Count/Countess is too busy to deal with.

Defences

As a farming town, there is little in terms of military protection in Arvensis. With Blackbourne in crisis, only a few guardsmen are paid to defend Arvensis, but more often than not these few are enough. The region is peaceful most of the time as the town is rather isolated on its corner of the Kingdom, but the recent rise of the Hoods has made the townsfolk an easy prey to the bandits. But unlike most villages, Arvensis still has wooden walls to defend itself, albeit a not very impressive one.

Industry & Trade

Arvensis's business is selling common and spellfarmed goods. They produce many species of scented plants for perfumes and colorful flowers such as mint, lavender, jasmine, lily, anise, and azalea, but also food such as rice, wheat, pomegranate, berries, and mushrooms. Arvensis is also known as being the largest provider of Healing Potion ingredients in Archana, such as the Twilight Lily and other plants, and also having most of the ingredients for the typical food sold in the Unification Fair, in the nearby town of Moyen.

History

As Esperbrook slowly fell to the Blight, Archana was suffering of low food supply, having to import almost everything they consumed. But with the help of the elves from Springdrop new spellfarming techniques were developed through the next decades, so that new types of plants, food, and soil could be enhanced through magic.

With the new techniques developed, the Flatlands seemed like the ideal place to start a new farming community, as the land was rich and there were already a bunch of farms around. In 432 AE to the West of the Flatlands and by a river, the town of Arvensis was built, a chance at regaining Archana's ability to provide food for itself. Many former inhabitants of Esperbrook and their descendants tried a new life at the new town, trying to regain their old jobs back.

The town has grown considerably in the last decades such was its success. While Archana still hasn't become self-sufficient, it is undeniable that the spellfarms at Arvensis have helped the people of Archana tremendously, lowering the prices of food and other farm products.

Architecture

The buildings in Arvensis are simple wattle and daub houses, whitewashed and sometimes painted for decoration. As creating plants is the main business in town, most residences are decorated with flowers and trees, lending to the cheerful and comforting feel of Arvensis, complemented by the sweet smells of the crops.

Geography

Arvensis's terrain is pretty standard for the Flatlands. The land is mostly flat, with only small variations in altitude. This causes the rivers to flood the surrounding land, forming the fertile soil that the town is famous for. but father away from the river and creeks, the soil is also great for planting plants that dislike muddy terrain, such as wheat.

Natural Resources

Some of the plants that are produced in farms today were natural of Arvensis's environment, in special the mints, lavenders, and berries. They were nearly all transformed into a source of income through farming and made even better when the elves came and started using their spellfarming techniques.
