Session 17
General Summary
Party headed home from Eldham, listening to Merith congratulate Ronan on his bravery and offering to speak to Kendel about getting the boy properly trained so he can join the Emerald Company. She lamented about Galan's death, not knowing how to break the news to Helgi, Galan's mother. Then, she pondered who the Vesperkin she saw before she blacked out could be.
Party returned to find the main gates busy with activity with several merchant's caravans outside and the Dead Goose Inn bustling, with Tabitha scrambling about to fill orders. They spoke with Kendel, breaking the news of Galan's death and then settled in for dinner and were pleasantly surprised to find that stew was not on the menu.
Party spent the night and in the morning, Merith told the group that Kendel left to break the news to Helgi.
Party overhears conversation between Aerith and Alenia in the Messy Cushion about the serial killer, Emil. Aerith displays nervousness about walking home at night.
Players attempted to find Marcel, but he was not to be found at the Messy Cushion or Dead Goose. Thinking this strange, they first searched Khatar Ravacan's house, finding it to be boarded up, and then finding all his possessions to be missing, as if cleared out. They then spoke to the Chief Enforcer, Lysanthir, asking if any drunks had been brought in recently, to which she replied no, and told them of two recent murders. One, a woman walking home from her pastry shop (Aerith), and the second being a man found in an advanced state of decomposition in the aristocratic district a couple nights ago. The party asked to inspect this body, and upon viewing it in the mortuary, Summer noticed that the clothes on the corpse matched those the party had observed Marcel wearing, confirming his death. They investigated his corpse and found that two spells had been used on him: Ray of Enfeeblement and Blight.
The party decided to ask around town about Marcel, but didn't discover much other than to discover residual Necromantic energy in the alleyway where Marcel's corpse was found, in between a currency exchange building and a city clerk's office. They asked in both these buildings about Marcel and found that Marcel had been inquiring after historical documents at the city clerk, but did not find any more useful information than that. Anlon had an epiphany and proposed using his Speak with the Dead spell to ask Marcel what happened to him.
Upon returning to the Enforcer's headquarters, they found a sleeping Lysanthir and the mortician had been bludgeoned over the head. They discovered Marcel's body gone. Initially believing he was now undead, Anlon used Locate Object to attempt to locate him via his clothes. They followed the trail and discovered he was located within the statehouse.
Party decided to pursue other avenues by investigating the job board at the Messy Cushion. Dain overheard a conversation from some merchants claiming that they felt the ground trembling near the northern mountains in the Great Divide, near Mythwell, and that they believed it to be an ill omen that the Wellspring in the mountains was active.
Party first took job to deliver a package to the politician, Arathor Iyatil in the aristocratic district, offering an absurd reward. They delivered it, and after leaving, the package detonated, killing Arathor. A nearby Enforcer who witnessed the whole exchange questioned Anlon, but didn't seem that bothered and simply gathered some basic information before sending the party on their way.
Party then went to investigate the young boy appearing at the edge of the woods every night, whom had been identified as a young boy who went missing 10 years ago. They tried various methods of communicating with the boy, but got no response, even having Summer throw a rock through the boy's head. Realizing he was a ghost / undead, Anlon used Turn Undead, destroying the young boy's soul.
Finally, party went to investigate claims of rowdy teenagers in the woods, with the parents wanting to know what they were doing. Summer moved closer to investigate and witnessed the boys chanting, shouting, and performing odd dance maneuvers around a blue fire. She then witnessed a face appearing in the fire before she tripped over a tree root and alerted the boys, who cursed and ran off. The fire then went out leaving her in darkness.
