Aelloran Cuisine
Description
Aellorah has a diverse range of foods across its four continents, and food is very important to most of the world. Beyond just the need for food to survive, many consider food a form of worship to the Seven Sisters -- Quen in particular, as it is the acceptance and ritual usage of something the Seven gifted to the world.
Foods
Here is a list of some of the unique dishes and foods found across Aellorah and how those foods impact the culture there.
Arak
The residents of Arak have a diverse range of foods available, and they like it spicy. Arak has many popular dishes that might make someone from Myr or Gothir cry from the extreme heat that the locals enjoy.
Acofavus
A grain soaked in Acotekethi tea, with lime juice, melted cheese, and black beans.
Acotekethi / Tinalagosi (Emberberries)
Despite their name, Acotekethi (Letheni) / Tinalagosi (Myrian) are not a berry, or even a fruit. Acoteketh is actually a pepper, and a spicy one at that. They are a bit hotter than a habanero. These "berries" are used in a wide range of dishes all across the continent and are one of the most important crops.
Baldanaharis
Baldanaharis is the specialty dish of Granindir in the Yzerid il Gamor. It consists of a pretzel dough wrapped around a filling of bacon, cheese, and Charatekethi (hot peppers), which is then baked, dusted with salt, and brushed with garlic butter.
Frostfire Berries
Unlike Emberberries, Frostfire Berries are an actual berry, resembling a blackberry that has a cool blue color near the top and gradually shifting to a red color near the bottom. They initially have an initial cool and sour taste that gradually changes to a fiery heat with notes of cinnamon. They are unique to the Sundor il Doren region and are used for various dishes, but are particularly loved when used to make Frostfire Mead.
Grandenar
Grandenar is a street food found in Granindir which is made by curing beef in salt before smoking it in palm leaves and putting it on skewers. It is then slathered in a citrus garlic sauce. Any kind of citrus fruit can be used, though oranges are preferred. The sauce is made with confit garlic that is mashed into a paste and mixed with the citrus of choice, with a little bit of a thickener added (corn/potato starch?).
Suthecadir
Suthecadir is a salty dessert food found in Granindir, and involves freezing sweet cream in a Raymiskin container and topping it with salted caramel, bacon, and nuts.
Myr
The inhabitants of Myr enjoy spices, having a diverse range of options available to them both from their native plants, but also from the spice market in Catarvoss. They also have a bit of a sweet tooth, with a local favorite being peaches.
Pegreltis
Whipped cream mixed with a berry compote, topped with more whipped cream, honey, and shortbread cookies.
Plomatin
A popular dessert / snack food in Myr, especially on the streets of Artus, which is a small hunk of honey bread that is filled with a fruit called 'Ploma' (peaches) and cream, seasoned with cinnamon.
Reshyk
Food in Reshyk is very aromatic, but simple. They do not like spicy foods like that found in Arak, but they do like hot foods. If you were to serve a Dwarf cold Skollbarken, they might balk at you.
Ajongir
A grain alcohol from Kantor made using water from the Moil Kalvik hot springs. The drink has health benefits due to the minerals in the water.
Batuji
This stuffed bread contains a thick cream cheese with rosemary and capers.
Bram Ulbaren
Onions that are roasted with garlic, cheese, and herbs inside.
Frostcap Mushrooms
Very similar to portobello mushrooms, these mushrooms can survive the harsh cold of Reshyk and seem to cook down faster than some other mushrooms.
Lenthik
A dish containing a medley of fermented vegetables with a green meat sauce.
Moilar Wabiren
A skewer of small balls of mutton wrapped around melted cheese and soaked in an herb sauce.
Stonebread
Dwarven Stonebread is an interesting type of bread that is made from rye flour, mineral water, barley malt, and a low-yield yeast that gives the resulting dough a dense texture. However, there is a secret ingredient that the Dwarves keep to themselves, which is crushed up ash from a Dwarven forge. This gives it a very smokey flavor. The dough is baked twice to give the bread a hard, crunchy texture. Foreigners have a very hit-or-miss opinion of this food.
Skollbarken
Skollbarken is a Dwarven favorite, and consists of ground mutton, basil, and caramelized onions. It is packed onto a skewer and coated in a layer of a duxelles made from Frostcap Mushrooms and then grilled. Foreigners have tried to put their own spin on it, notably Shawna's Skollbarken in the market of the city of Ilmerglain, by adding things such as garlic and rosemary, but the Dwarves generally don't favor this variation and prefer the traditional recipe.
Gothir
Food in Gothir is packed with fruits and nuts, as well as various meats. There is not much grain because it is difficult to farm when you face the constant threat of attack from Bakari.
Pursaberry
One of the more popular fruits is the Pursaberry, which is a small round berry with an orange-yellow color. Its taste is somewhere between an orange and a blueberry.
Gurwi
Many dishes in Gothir are cooked in underground ovens called "Gurwi". Food is wrapped in the large leaves of the Gond plant found all over the continent, and then placed on top of the coals of a fire and then covered with dirt.
Gondiv
One popular dish, known as Gondiv, is made by cooking beef or venison in a Gurwi, and then the meat is battered and fried. Then, it is tossed in a thick Pursaberry glaze.
Ingredients
Here is a list of ingredients used throughout Aellorah.
Dalazir
Dalazir is a flower with orange petals that grows out of the sand dunes of the Ixala Sunori in Myr, with a root that stretches sometimes a hundred feet or more down to the soil below the sands. The root is extracted from the sand carefully to preserve as much of it as possible without destroying the base so it can regrow, and then ground up into a powder which has an earthy taste. It also has a warm, sweet spiciness to it. Closest real life analog would be cumin mixed with cinnamon.
Tennasesir
Tennasesir is a type of pepper that grows from pods on a bushel found within the Ixala Sunori of Myr. It has a bite similar to other peppers, but the name "bright pepper" is for its ability to enhance, or "brighten", other flavors in a dish, similarly to salt. The pepper flavor also has a sweetness to it. The closest real life analog would be a mixture of green and pink peppercorns ground, with MSG added.
