Gnomes

Innovation, exploration and ultimately knowledge, these are truly the passions you inherited and what makes you feel fulfilled, powerful, capable. Whether in the library or laboratory, studying the sciences or mechanical world, or the esoterics and strangeness of magick and manna, or how magick and technology can blend, you are forever a student in some fashion. It's in your blood, it's in your soul, it's what you are. It is undeniable, a gift of heritage, a curse of ancestry.

This off the wall natural curiosity will show itself in many ways in any gnome's life and you are likely no exception. Everything from bits of random trivia and knowledge to heavy investment and studies in the sciences, you will find your niche, your itch. Such is what it means to be a gnome. Amongst your fellow gnomes there is a saying in regards to comparing yourselves to your ancestral cousins, dwarven kind;

They seek perfection, whereas we seek innovation.

That and of course to quote a modern hero of your people, and a legend in the world of firearms and gunsmithing;

"The difference between madness and science is, put simply, merely in keeping meticulous, detailed and accurate notes!"

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Gnomes do not really have gender based naming conventions of any kind. As previously discussed names are more social title than just name. They grow as one collects prestige and climbs in society. There is structure to this tied in part to certain inflections and syllables in their own language, that is Gnomish, and different key parts of words or titles or professions, taking small pieces and stitching them in a specific way unto their own personal name. As one might guess, this can make identifying individuals with documentation and such a great difficulty. Thus it is worthwhile to note the other purpose of a nickname. Very normally this will be the birth name, that is the root piece, the one given at birth, and that appears on legal documentation. Which is a blessing for the rest of us, allow me to assure you. Below you will find some of the more memorable names (and the nickname/legal name) as well as pronunciation guides as best I could manage once again, for your reference.

Masculine names

Of all the ancestral cultural artifacts in naming tied to linguistics and well ancestry, perhaps the oddest I've ever come across is that of the Gnomish peoples. Gnomish is an interesting language, in that its spoken and written structures and philosophy are completely divorced from its naming conventions, specifically for people. It could almost be compared to scientific notation for how it is written, mostly, that is how precise it is in its rules, and equally in how it is spoken. Its twenty-three characters and four symbols that can be used to represent specific inflections on certain syllables form a unique structure. Yet when we arrive to naming conventions, all of the above seems to take a backseat.

Gnomish names are notoriously unstable. They are in some ways equal parts accolade, title, bragging right as well as personal identifiers. Thankfully this is less noticeable in family names, which we shall discuss momentarily. However within naming structures writ large, understand that for a gnome, your name is like a bragging transcript. The higher your societal position the more syllables your name will have. Family names are thankfully mostly exempt to this rule, though this does not mean they are not just as strange and complex in both spelling and pronunciation even when translated. I will do my best to explain more thoroughly how the naming structure of personal names works below. For the moment just understand that there is a reason most gnomes you meet, if they are even remotely polite, they will introduce themselves formally with the long and strange syllabled names and then offer 'However you may call me nickname. It is because they know most cannot manage the strange structures, syllables and pronunciations of their naming structures.

Do not fear offending a gnome by using their nickname they provide you, that would be my advice dearest reader. It is important to remember that this is not offered as a tone of familiarity, oh no. They offer it as a token of graciousness and also smugness. You will make a gnome's day should you simply surrender and use the nickname, for by their way of thinking you are acknowledging that you cannot pronounce their name, which given the ties to social position, is more or less an ego stroking compliment for a gnome to recieve.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Gnomes are an interesting peoples in that they do not really generally see beauty as most others do. For most any other people they seek some 'height' of something, some idealized version of something when seeking beauty. Attractiveness, physical shape, symmetry, whatever the driving views might be fueled by they do seek them. Gnomes however don't. They don't see beauty in 'perfect' they see beauty in the imperfect. For in that 'imperfect' there is limitless potential. There is untold knowledge. There is undiscovered understanding. Even to write this out feels strange to describe, and to truly understand it one would need to discuss the ideal of beauty itself, what it means, what the word should entail, with a gnome for some hours over stiff drinks. It is however a most fascinating discussion to have and I would highly recommend it should anyone find themselves with such an opportunity.

Relationship Ideals

For a gnome, a romantic partner is also an intellectual partner. They are constantly bouncing ideas and thoughts and theories off each other, their small talk ideally would sound like university shop talk between two professors working on a cutting edge paper or study. It cannot be emphasized enough how much gnomes value intelligence and curiosity of the academic sort amongst people close to them, particularly lovers for any long term commitment.

Gnomes as Characters

Traits: Humanoid, Gnome

Age:

Gnomes do not live as long as their ancestral cousins, that is dwarves. However they do live far longer than humans, and noticeably longer than halfmen. Based on what I could glean it is not uncommon for gnomes to get well into their second century, though the oldest gnome we have record of died at 191 years of age, and they generally see their own life expectancy to be between 170-180 culturally. Gnomes though small of stature, quite noticeably so, take until about two decades of life to begin maturing, and are generally not considered adults amongst their own kind until the age of 30. They can make most interesting travelling companions, the way their minds work, with their sharpened intellect, and scientific and logic heavy mindset, as well as a natural inclination for hands on discovery and study. They are also far more likely to be Arcanis-Touched given they deviated from dwarven kind seemingly from mixing with the Faei in the distant past.

Languages
All gnomes start play fluent in Valarian Common as well as Gnomish, and then any other languages that might come from their cultural background, heritage, or background. They also then select a number of bonus languages to speak equal to their Intelligence Modifier (so long as it is a positive number of course). These must be languages that would be reasonably common based on where you came from/grew up.

Small Size
Due to being small size, Gnomes would normally wield smaller weapons. Lower the damage dice by 1 step for any weapon when considering a gnomish character wielding an appropriately sized version for their frame. Also due to their smaller size, they do present a smaller target, having a permanent bonus of +2 to their AC that qualifies as a Dodge bonus, which does mean it is removed if they are caught flat-footed or surprised.

Low-Light Vision
You can see in dim light as though it were bright light, so you ignore the concealed condition due to dim light.

Natural Marksmen
Gnomes are an interesting bunch, skilled crafters and smart, but also surprisingly skilled shots. They treat the range profiles for ranged weapons that do not use strength (so normal bows, crossbows, and guns, but not composite or war bows) as if their range profile is multiplied by 1.5 times.

I like your gnomes very much. They make me question my decision not to include tiny races for my players in my world. I mean, I do have a reason for this decision, but sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be nicer with them.

This quote right here: "They seek perfection, whereas we seek innovation." is the best distinction I've ever seen between dwarves and gnomes! I really like how you present them in this article. Gnomes are a tricky race to fit into a world and I like your approach. Not relevant but damn, now I need to write an article about my gnomes as well! Great article, I loved the section about their naming, very chaotic :)

Worldember is finally here!! Here is my pledge!

Thank you, yeah I fought with what to say in that quote for a while, but once I found that sentence I knew I had something :) And the naming I fought with for a while too, but ultimately decided I had to embrace the chaos of their more reckless and 'run to the edge' love for science, for experimentation. I'm glad you liked it, and love that its got you thinking about your own article!

I love your gnomes. I would like to hang out with them and chat about random things.   I love the quote about meticulous notes making insanity science.
