Apex Corporation

No matter what happens, keep trying. If you fail, fail better.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.
--Samuel Beckett
Beckett's words are carved into a marble wall at the entrance to Apex headquarters on Tellus. Today, in 2058, the corporation lives up to its very name, pushing humanity to a new era of technological advancement and comfort. And when there are roadblocks to success, Beckett's words drive the scientists of Apex ceaselessly onward.   The Apex Corporation is the sole entity behind the Odysseus expeditions to Adarus, managing the grand endeavor under a project codenamed: Iliad, or the Iliad Program.

Structure

Apex uses a function-based corporate organization structure, with Dr. Isaac Evenway at the top as the company's founder and chairman. Being a private corporation, it does not have tradeable public stock, so all responsibilities are kept in-house. Isaac does have a board of directors, as required by corporate law, but it is generally assumed (backed up by a track record of indifference) that they will never interfere with the man's goals for Apex, no matter how lofty they can be at times.   Most of the company's generalized research, open to the public and peer review, is conducted or held within the company's above-ground headquarters offices. Company and resource management tasks are also performed there by low-to-mid level employees. Only a handful of trained professionals in fields of science have offices or labs within the above-ground floors. It goes without saying, a lot of what happens in the public view is "stump research" that does enough to distract from the actual research below ground.   In the subterrainean depths beneath Apex headquarters there are twelve additional floors, called "Sections". Each section has been tasked with a specific (or sometimes broad) area of research and development. While all sections are protected by immense security measures, Sections 8 – 12 are afforded the highest countermeasures to intrusion.

Section 1: Ecological Development & Enhancement Technologies

Researches and develops new methods and technologies that can assist in stabilizing entire ecosystems and reduce (or even rollback) the effects of global warming.

Section 2: Anthropological/Archaeological Preservation and Restoration

AAPR tracks, archives, and preserves historical data relating to human evolution in areas of biological and cultural importance, while analyzing trends and integrating learned knowledge into new technologies or mediums of understanding.

Section 3: Advanced Aeronautics

Assigned to develop state-of-the-art in-atmosphere flight technologies.

Section 4: Advanced Astronautics

Tasked with developing tate-of-the-art space flight technologies for orbital and intrastellar exploration.

Section 5: Parapsychological Research

Discovers, researches, explores, and attempts to recreate parapsychological phenomena. Section 5 is a legacy project that dates back to the 1930's with Dr. Thomas D. Evenway (Winter's Secrets). Today, it's primarily concerned with researching resonance factor phenomena.

Section 6: Metallurgical Research & Development

MRD experiments with and creates complex alloy combinations, improves existing alloy technologies, and researches economic, but more effective solutions for commercial/industrial/scientific use of said technologies.

Section 7: Siliconic Technologies

Designs and develops cutting-edge computer technologies for consumer and commercial use, to include hardware and software.

Section 8: Human Augmentation Technologies

Researches and develops medical, military, industrial, and commercial anatomical augmentations with a focus on human enhancement and adaptive biotech.

Section 9: Nanotechnologies

Designs and engineers advanced nanotech for commercial and private development, medical fields, agricultural applications, or other specified purposes.

Section 10: Advanced Military Research & Development

AMRD develops technologies for contracted paramilitary and government military organizations with priority focus technologies exlusive to A-Sec.

Section 11: Advanced Energy Solutions

Tasked with researching and creating alternative, renewable, and high-capacity energy resources.

Section 12: Artificial Intelligence & Quantum Computing Applications

Tasked with the creation of advanced cyber systems and virtual-spectrum technologies. Houses the blue box for the Prophet AI.   Other sections exist, but only 1 - 12 are located below Apex HQ. The rest are scattered across the globe. The Iliad Program, Section 17, is located on the Pacific Ocean floor near the Mariana Trench.

History

Apex Biomedical was founded in 2039 when a younger Dr. Isaac Evenway noticed the rampant pollution of politics in the world of science (most notably in areas of medical advancement). After the death of his wife earlier that same year due to cancer, Isaac made it Apex’s sole mission to develop an ultimate cure for the disease. While his efforts inevitably proved futile, his firm did make incredible strides in the field, unleashing a renaissance in the biomedical discipline. Half a decade later, when the gates to Safe Haven—the corporate-run city-state on an artificial island, east of Guam—opened up, Apex dropped “Biomedical” from its name and became an overarching corporation with ties to all different fields of scientific research.   Today, in 2058, Apex lives up to its very name, pushing humanity to a new era of technological advancement and comfort. To protect its many endeavors and highly classified research secrets, it's had to employ its own armed militia, the Apex Security Forces (ASF): a media-criticized private army that consists mostly of former military veterans from around the world (mostly U.S. and NATO).   Apex has always been at the center of attention for media reports concerning the tech world. In 2054, the company was investigated by the Corporate Tasks Initiative; a U.S.-run intelligence program aimed at preventing white collar crime, industrial espionage, and other illicit business practices. The suspicion: development of a self-aware artificial intelligence; which had been banned on an international level following a binding U.N. resolution. CTI investigators could uncover no evidence of such a project; however, even after their withdrawal from the company's headquarters, the agency is keeping a close eye on Evenway.   Later that same year, in partnership with another tech company that had recently opened up a new Safe Haven firm, Apex made an extraordinary breakthrough in nanotechnology. Together, both companies are looking into possible bio-medical applications ranging from reparative therapy to human augmentation.

The Iliad Program and Odyssey Expeditions

In 2050, Section 17 was constructed on the Pacific Ocean floor near the edge of the Marina Trench. This aquatic facility is the command center and launching point for the Iliad Program, which is the higher echelon of Apex’s exploration endeavors on Adarus. The Odysseus expeditions are the dedicated teams of explorers and security personnel that travel through the Polyphemus Gate.   The gate works by manipulating the quantum entangled particles of a medallion worn by Alexis Starlight. The medallion was created using resonance but then later replicated in 81 B.A. (1934 C.E.) when she was thrown through a singularity created on Adarus. Her medallion is the key to creating the bridge that connects the two worlds.   In 2054, after constantly running into dead ends with getting the gate to function as intended, physics prodigy Ezra Nash was recruited to the Iliad Program. The savant is responsible for making the first successful connection to Adarus one year later.

Military

The private armed forces of the Apex Corporation are the ASF, or Apex Security Forces. Their Iliad Program detachments are the E-ASF as they operate as expeditionary forces. You can read more about the ASF here (article needed).
