Festival of the Setting Sun

The people of Vahlaasas worship the sun goddess Vahliimi, a creator deity that brings live, warmth and protection. Many celebrations throughout the year focus on the motions of the celestial body; its position on the deep blue sky is used to mark the beginning of new seasons, oftentimes celebrated with festivities. One such festival is the Festival of the Setting Sun, which signals the end of summer and ushers in a bountiful autumn.

After the Harvest Week ends, the Vahlsh party for many days and nights (the rites call for at least "three days of dancing and eating", but in reality the festival can last up to an entire week). During these days, people cook pies and cakes and share food among each other. Every night, in the outskirts of each village, workers gather and light up large campfires and spend hours and hours dancing and drinking together. These gatherings last until long past midnight, fighting the empty darkness with their hearts set ablaze. The Festival of the Setting Sun serves as a reminder that there is power to be found among your peers, your family and your community; it is also one of the last celebrations the Vahlsh will enjoy before the cold and bitter winds of winter arrive.

Components and tools

The most important part of the festivities is the central campfire, a pillar of wooden beams stacked on top of each other in a crude pyramid. The wood will be set on fire by either a priest or the village elder, and all villagers will perform a ritual dance around the campfire. After that, the party can truly begin; people are allowed to dance, drink, eat and have fun in any way they want for the rest of the night.

Observance

The festival takes place during the first week of autumn, during the month of Hekata. While the scriptures ask for three days and three nights of celebration, most people will take the entire week off and spend more time with their families and friends.
