Merfolk Myths

Many myths have been spread about people of the sea, terrors of the deep, or more simply, Merfolk. While most stay within the oceans, few have ventured onto land to either trade or wage war on the land-dwelling civilisations (to little effect).

Goblin Tribal Myths

Goblins are certain that Merfolk existed at one point in time, but aren't sure if they do anymore, and thus see them as entirely mythical supernatural beings.

Supposed Traits

Merfolk are often described as half-fish, half-human, and having blue, black, or silver scales that cover their entire body. They have webbed hands with claws and webbed, stubby toes. Their scales are always slimy or wet, covered in poisonous algae, and are said to allow them to camouflage in the dark parts of the forests or in riverbeds.

They're rarely clothed, but if they are they have a simple loincloth made of seaweed covering them. They carry spears, lances, halberds and other polearms made of driftwood, coral, and sharp, pointed shells, and they carry many harpoons to capture their prey.

They're omnivores, preferring the flesh of goblins as they have enough fish-meat to eat under the waves and would prefer a vegetable-based snack. They, however, hate the smell of pterimum, so it's best to have some on the person at all times.

Historical Basis

Spread and Commonality

The tales are pretty common, especially when fishing or walking around bodies of water. Tales of merfolk are often spread to sprouts while they're still young. There's even a holiday in some tribes where they put out mirrors on the ocean-facing trees to try to scare the merfolk from coming onto shore.

Be's careful, Lifti! Peer oust under th'muck! Look'n see- Make sure there ain'no spikifolk down there, lookin' for a fresh, crunchy meal!
— A goblin huntress, half-joking with her friend

Lift'er from the shore, they did! Oust into the deep dark, under the curlin' wash! I'll ne'er see 'er again!
— A wailing goblin mother
