Fading
Fading or the fade is a potentially deadly condition that can affect Califa. Califa require social interaction and close proximity to other living beings to remain healthy, and isolation will eventually cause fading. The fade is also known as "the little death" or "mental death" as it reduces the Califa to a doll-like condition with no independent action from the person.
Causes
The fade is caused by a prolonged period of isolation. Califa are incredibly social creatures and require close interaction with other Califa or humans to remain healthy.
Symptoms
A Califa suffering from the fade will exhibit low mood, pervading all aspects of their life. Concentration issues and forgetfulness become more prevalent, and hypersomnia starts to occur, especially during the latter stages of the fade. Independent actions by the Califa become subdued.
Common physical symptoms include fatigue and digestive problems. Appetite decreases as the fade continues, resulting in weight loss. Physical activity starts to decrease, and immune responses weaken, increasing the potential for severe illness.
Treatment
Minor cases of fading can be treated through physical contact with other Califa. The process of recovering from the fade often takes longer than the original process of the fade, and recovery can be hampered by other health issues that are present.
More severe cases of the fade are more difficult to treat, and often treatment fails to improve the condition. Hospice care is administered at the same time as treatment for the fade. The most severe cases, such as those who have lost any sense of self, receive only hospice care to make them comfortable.
Cultural Reception
How other Califa respond to a victim of the fade depends on the circumstances of its occurrence. Criminals sentenced to ostracization suffer from the fade and eventually die from malnutrition. As this is the most severe punishment for crimes, these victims are viewed with scorn.
Non-criminal Califa suffering from the fade are seen in a far more sympathetic light. The necessary isolation is rare, and victims are viewed with pity.
