Halothorne Vapour
"And from the crushed remains of the thorns, came fine vapour. The steam would rise, and the Order shall claim it in fine bottles. From there, they shall come to the towns of corruption and decay, and let the people of it become free. Their freedom, in Saint Hypnos' name, shall bestow to them a peaceful transition to the lands beyond. Only then, shall their work be done,"Halothorne is a form of plant that grows specifically in the lands controlled by Saint Hypnos' Order of Slumbering , a small group that lingers in tiny numbers across the more diseased regions of Aitso, such as the Thevagon Isles, and Scylla. The plant itself, in nature, had only grown off of a miniscule island that was devoured by the ever-growing chasm that rested below Malus' domain. What was left of Halothorne, the very few seeds and stems, had been collected by all of the remaining members of Saint Hypnos' Order of Slumbering , in order to be preserved and kept in the hands of good people.
- Excerpt from Saint Hypnos' Order of Slumbering, on the use of Halothorne Vapour
Halothorne is known across many regions as being a miracle cure for suffering and despair. It functions as a severe anti-depressant and, in greater forms, can even be used as a method for euthanasia. The vapours collected by crushing the plant can cause people to simply drift off to sleep - and potentailly never wake up. This form of care is treated with high regard, by the dozen or so members of the Order of Slumbering, and must be used in only the most dire of times.
What makes Halothorne as unique as people say it is, is the amazing smell that comes from the plant. Since smelling copious amounts of the vapour causes death, the smell is known as being on many people's bucket lists. Those that smell faint traces of it describe it as being similar to lavender or rosemary. Due to this, the smell is often diluted with lavender and rosemary, for recreational consumption. The smell, whilst not inherently unique, offers its capability of a painless death in a way that is not seen with other odours and substances. The smell is common, but the traits of the substance is what makes it truly unique.
Many say that the smell itself is hypnotic, and that even simulations of the smell, through magical altercations and illusions, can be reason enough to understanding why Halothorne Vapour is incredibly sought after. Different replications of the smell have reached further than the Order of Slumbering itself. Often, markets that host shady merchants and clerks use illusory smells in order to coax people into buying their 'limited edition' Halothorne vapours, despite having no method to gaining the vapours themselves.
In other uses, Halothorne Vapour is used by perfumers and poisoners, in order to incapacitate or kill their targets. As the chemical is often used only by the Order, being in control of the region at which this plant grows, these illicit uses are often done by those that are disgraced, or even banished from the order for malevolent acts. Due to the scarcity of the material, only the most credible contract killers and mercenaries are given the substance to use on targets. They often swap lavender candles with the Halothorne Vapour, infused into the wax itself. It can allow for numerous people to be defeated at once.
This vile strategy was first employed by a mercenary from the Wayfarer's Belt, who had eliminated an entire platoon of elite Silvergarde warriors, who were planning on staging an uprising in Raman, on Halland Island. Despite the act itself being evil, the purpose of it had saved countless lives for both Raman and the Hallandary. However, the King of Raman, in order to cover up his involvement in the theft of Halothorne, had decided to lock the same mercenary away, to die from the same candles.
