Kalabasht
Kalabasht is one of the 7 Confederate Capitals. It is one of the originals, and is also the Farthest West of all the capitals. Known for its draconic revival architecture, its martial colleges, and its strategic placement on a major trade route, the city is huge and very important.
Demographics
- Separating them according to wealth/social class: 8% of the population is a noble, 18% is merchant-class, 24% is soldier-class, 30% is commoner-class, 15% are destitute, and 5% are slave-class.
- Separating them according to race: 64% are human or half-human, 26% are elves, 4% are tieflings, 6% are other races.
Government
The government is controlled by 2 forces, a council and a royal family.
The royal family is the Yash family line, a human family that has been in control of the city since the founding of the Confederacy in 5622. The Line passes down to the eldest son of the baroness, not the baron, but the men are still in charge. The heir must also be a pure-blooded human, half-humans being considered mutts and bastards.
The Council is made up of military officers and respected soldiers that are no longer in active duty. They make most of the decisions for the military and for the population, while the royal family takes care of the city itself.
Industry & Trade
Kalabasht not only serves as a checkpoint on a major trade route but is also a site of major manufacturing. Smithies are common here and produce most of the Confederacy's weapons and armor that aren't imported from Maglubiya.
Infrastructure
The city has a large sewer system built by Kobolds that disposes of waste below ground in Underdark landfills.
The city itself is surrounded in multiple walls with siege weapons in between the outermost and next walls
Guilds and Factions
- The Golden Hand is based inside of Kalabasht and makes its relief efforts to the rest of the Confederacy with resources from here, and with the patronage of The bastard son of the great baron, Mathias Vax.
- The Blackblades have a huge base of operations within the city, unrest being common for the lack of participation in government both by the nobles and the commoners. This base of operations is controlled by Glassmind Jorass.
- The royal Yash family is trying as hard as it can to quash the Blackblades, silence the Golden Hand, and disperse the Takad syndicate within its walls. They are having a tough time of it and their reputation is declining, allowing the Council to gain more power in the city and get closer and closer to superseding the family.
- The Takad syndicate is thriving in Kalabasht, using the trade routes to smuggle goods and using the sewers beneath the city as meeting places. They have even constructed a base of operations within the sewers: a bar named the Bastard's rest.
- The council is attempting to gain more and more power within the city, attempting to stage a coup and initiate martial law, believing only they can solve the city's problems.
History
When it was first founded, Kalabasht was nothing but a fort along a trade route, named Fort Irons. Over time, more and more traders and immigrants moving through grew the fort into a city: Iron City.
During the Founding of the Confederacy, Iron city had sustained heavy damage and suffered a great fire. They rebuilt it with more modern architecture (for the time) and renamed it Kalabasht, after the family that had once ruled before being killed in the fire.
Architecture
The architecture of the city is Draconic revival architecture, an older style, and New Kjord architecture, a newer style.
- The Draconic revival style was modeled after ancient draconic ruins and includes primarily solid worked stone and marble, with large open rooms and spires, with dome-like pyramid structures with spikey decorations.
- New Kjord architecture is a lot of wider structures with sharper angles and Hexagonal supports and spires.
Natural Resources
The only resource produced enough here to be notable would be wood. All other resources are imported along the trade route.
