Ælmu-Yu
The Ælmu-Yu are a terrifying and rare race, originating in the black dessert of Iquin, they evolved from early legged snakes to survive in their unique environment. Almost alien in appearance, one may be forgiven for mistaking them for a strange lizardfolk or dragonborn.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Ælmu-Yu have a range of scale colors depending on their ethnicity, from the black Ælmu-Qui to the light blue Ælmu-Gi. Their head has 2 pairs of eyes focused somewhat on the side, one set placed further back and higher than the other. IT has a large bony crest at the back with miniature sails on the bottom to release heat and for courtship. The strangest part of their biology is their lower jaw, which splits in half to allow the Ælmu-Yu yo swallow prey nearly two thirds its size. Along its back is a sail that can be retracted into the body by relaxing the muscles that hold it up. Its upper arms are similar to that of other humanoids, but their lower arms are covered in many defensive scutes and its fingers are fused into two fingers that are capable of rotation in on their knuckle, along with an overlarge prehensile thumb. Ælmu-Yu walk on their padded toes and so have what look like a second, reversed knee. Their legs also have retractable sails along them. The legs of Ælmu-Yu allow them to travel quickly while minimizing contact with the incredibly hot black sand. Their overlarge hands help them strangle their prey or break their bones before eating it.
Biological Traits
Some Ælmu-Yu only age to 40 due to their extreme environments, but Ælmu-Yu in civilized areas with magical medicine may live to 110. They may be anywhere from 4 to 7 ft. tall depending on ethnicity. Weight varies similarly from 130 lobs to 370 lbs for an average adult. Females can be differentiated from males by their enlarged crest and sails.
Genetics and Reproduction
Ælmu-Yu reproduce sexually and, after mating, will lay a clutch of 5-20 eggs, half of which will survive the heat of the environment on uncivilized areas. The eggs will hatch in about 5 months' time.
Growth Rate & Stages
Ælmu-Yu live to about 70 years if not killed, and reach sexual maturity at 15
Ecology and Habitats
Ælmu-Yu do best in hot, low water environments.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Ælmu-Yu mostly eat rodents, birds, and reptiles between 1/16th and 2/3rds of their size. They store extra water and fat in their various sails and will store calcium and minerals in their crest.
Biological Cycle
Due to the low variation in their environment, Ælmu-Yu are not affected by seasons and hence do not hibernate.
