Marrow pecker
This really is a quite disturbing creature. Marrow peckers are quite rare beasts. Mostly they are found in the higher treeless areas of the mountains or in grassy plains. They tend to live in smal groups of up to 5 individuals but in times of war they follow the armies in big numbers.
Appearance
Marrow peckers grow to the size of a medium sized eagle. Their bodys are covered in brown feathers with white markings on the wings and on their chest. Overall they resemble a really large wood pecker. However their heads are completly naked with two giant pink eyes with narrow black irisses. Their beak looks like the normal beak of a woodpecker but is slighly longer and way thicker so that they can peck open bones with ease. Their tongue is extremly long and flexible and ends in a spiked tip that has many spikes that point backwards and leak an acid that liquifies bonemarrow.Food
Marrow Peckers are a strange mixture of a bird of prey and a scavenger. They mostly focus on carrion but when times are dire or they spot an easy prey they will activly hunt as well. Mostly they are seen on battlegrounds after the battle is over where they peck their way even through thin metal armors to use their long tongue to scrape out the marrow out of the unlucky fellows who died. Their diet consists mainly of marrow but they seem to eat some meat as well. The acid these birds produce to liquify bone marrow is sometimes used to clean clocks and other things. It only seems to affect flesh, metal or stone are not affected.Size | ~60cm Wingspan 1,2m |
