He is the rival of Awhoukha-kē-Ngo, and according to lore he steals the sun back from Awhoukha-kē-Ngo every morning, before the sun is stolen back from him. Nāukha-kē-Auʻu is known as a sort of playful trickster god, though he always has the people's best in mind.
