Blueback Boar

Few animals appear as menacing as a blueback boar. Don't be fooled by the menacing stance, razor sharp teeth, and bony back spines, these boars love a good cuddle.
While these animals are native to Temperil, you'll find them in our Herd Herbivores Sector, alongside our seven red ribbon boars.

Quick Facts

COMMON NAME: Blueback Boar
  SCIENTIFIC NAME: Sus caerulupellis
DIET: Fruits, seeds, nuts, roots, grasses found on forest floors
  HABITAT: Sparse jungles
  CONSERVATION STATUS: Near Threatened
FUN FACT: The spines on the boar's back isn't bone, but a soft flexible sponge!

Anatomy

Blueback boars stand nearly three feet tall. They have short, stumpy legs that let them run at maximum speeds of just ten miles per hour.
The fur of this species is a bright blue, with darker and lighter stripes all across the body. Each boar has a completely unique pattern!
Baby boars are mostly white, with tiny blue spots. As they age, the white fades into that same blue.

Reproduction

These boars have up to seven piglets in a single litter. The mother fiercely protects them, whilst the father waddles off to eat food and find a new mate.
As a single mother, she must keep herself and her babies alive and protect them from predators.
A few years ago our female boar had a litter of babies. The father went beserk and started attacking them, so they're separated now.

Diet

Seeds, fruits, and nuts make up the majority of their diet in the wild. Our boars feast mainly on delicious apples and a blend of seeds, nuts, hay, and occasionally a sunlight tomato or two.

Fun Fact!

The spines on the boar's back are made of a soft sponge, with an internal muscle system! This gives them the ability to manipulate this spine. They use it as a form of silent communication, specifically to alert others in a herd that predators are nearby. It is also used in courtship rituals!

The fact that the spines are made of soft muscle tissue is so weird and cool to picture I am so curious as to what some of the movements and positions that they might make and end up in to communicate might be, that's just such a funky visual to try and picture. Such an interesting critter and so nice to visit the Zoo once again and meet another fantastic creature! :D

These animals needed something to set them apart, otherwise they're just a basic boar! although there's nothing wrong with a boar, they're super cute <3 And thank you! I hope to have so many more wonderful creatures :D

I'd love to see how they communicate with their spines. Do they raise and lower them in strips, or do they wave them from side to side? I hope we'll read a language-article about their communication sometime. Wonderful species, although I'd be more afraid of them than want to cuddle them.
