Torment : Meet

Arnal screamed in a primal way unknown to his civilized self, and it felt like his eye were eggs being boiled and hardened as a searing pain spread through the trunk of his body. All that remained was steam. That much he knew, as he bolted toward his target and dodged the occasional seared stump that now cooled with condensed water. Steam followed him as his bindgold-enhanced cloak froze anything around him, and prevented their movement-

At least, unless it was met with a force equal to its own, such as a vicious fire.

Only a few people had studied such destructive consequences so closely.

“Danno!” He screamed, leaving behind the confused cries and moans of the train station, who had just discovered that outside their little riverside station, much of the forested path had been completely vaporized, leaving only muddy soil in chunks around seared, withered trunks and fried grasses in its weak. The smell of fire and burning plant matter, of burning flesh, was all that remained of everyone in its path. Ever so often, Arnal tripped over a pile of empty clothing or half-vaporized skeleton. He couldn’t see anyone alive. Only the distant figure of Danno, his younger brother with his youthful, tricky smile and sun-drenched hair.

“Danno!”

“Brother, you–” Danno exclaimed joyously. “Brother Arnal, are you calling me by my name?”

“Danno, what did you do,” Arnal screamed as he reached his younger brother and grabbed him by the front of his oil-black cloak. It smelled like fire and burning bones. “Danno!!!!”

Danno did not seem to sense the threat and simply smiled at him wholeheartedly. He plucked a piece of amber and sang into it while writing a sigil. Then he dropped it down a drain pipe, almost excitedly and let his brother sweep him into a threatening grasp.

“Don’t worry, Brother Arnal, it’ll be alright.” His smaller arms reached up and touched Arnal’s bulging forearms gently. “I just told her. It finally happened for you, Arnal, I am so happy for you.”

“What?”

“You’re a flesh and bone man now,” Danno became to cry joyously. “Seven long years… you’re finally real again.”

“Welcome back,” Astraea said as she approached the forest with a small warband of her soldiers. “We will fetch the taglock they stole from you. And you, Danno…”

Danno glanced over at his aunt proudly, grinning from ear to ear.

She huffed out a slightly relieved breath. “Taking out not only a warband, but a Deii Captain. This is sloppy work, but luckily for you, it worked out in your favour.”

There was nothing but emptiness for what felt like miles, an emptied forest, scorched land. The grief seemed stuck in his throat as he felt nothing but a bright, dreamless morning waiting for him.
