Chloromancy
Chloromancy is another form of magic/cunning alongside Lithomancy, although the two are viewed very differently and have vastly different applications. Whereas Lithomancy is concerned with deriving energy externally, Chloromancy involves the synthesization of external organic materials into the body. In a sense, Chloromancy is involved in initiating Lithomancers, using the lichen that grows on rocks, though after that it is more of a fringe magic as it takes multiple, careful steps and has a high rate of failure - so not suited for battle, sport, or stage.
It is alchemical science, finding research as well as in fringe ecology geneticists, as a possible explanation of how the Milenakos evolved from (or with) certain species while others seem to have died out. This process is also theorized to be how the Coriniaid, Saesonaid, and Prydydd were able to evolve so quickly and mimic Milenakos peoples.
How localized or global are the effects?
- Global, this affects every area of the Island of Woad (and the adjoining islands)
How does it look or manifest?
- There are three gates to manifesting Chlorosynthesis:
- The first is the Gate of Burial, where two materials, one recipient and one donor are prepared.
- This gate can fail, and nullify the whole process
- The second is the Gate of Transmigration, where the recipient organism has absorbed the genetic structure of the donor and now undergoes rapid, chaotic cloning and osmosis. The magic used in this gate is particularly important for the third gate, in which there are four outcomes.
- The third gate is the Gate of Rebirth, but is also known as the Gate of Death, Calamity, or Doom if the magic fails and the organism will clearly die in the next cycle.
- This manifests in several ways:
- A reanimated/animated species, such as the Gwraig Verth, is created using a mix of Lithomancy and Chlorosynthesis
- An organically new species, such as the Deii (who absorb the Saesonaid), or the Sindainox (who absorb the Coriniaid)
- A hybrid species, such as the early Coriniaid and Deii
- Chlorosynthesis is also responsible and widely applied to interspecies reproduction, particularly between vastly different sentient species with different chromosonal makeups
- For example the Kubeleya who have X/0 sex determination and the Gannwyll Gwydd who have X/Y sex determination chromosones, take potions which encourage chlorosynthesis in the body and lower the chances of birth defects
How does it affect the plants and animals of the world?
- An example of this was when the bones of the extinct animal coati’s bones were synthesized with enchanted horsehair which had been grown under specific conditions
- It can reanimate species, create new species, and is similar in a way to genetic modification. It has much scientific and ecological applications
- However, because of the Oak and Laurel Cycle, it takes 18 years for “failed” or incomplete organisms to fully pass on. Some of these, such as Godsibbs, were abandoned and became monsters
How does it affect the people of your world?
- It is integral to the evolution of magic and cunning arts across the Islands, but also to the social and biological evolution of the people therein
- It is used in Lithomancy initiations, as well as symbiosis, summoning, and hybridizing creatures, and has even found use in transforming inanimate objects into tools which can be used for quick transformations - though not without a cost
