The nightfrost is an estranged weather pattern localized to the Drostollorian region. Every couple weeks or so, a wave of extreme cold passes from north to south, with the worst of it breaking at the cliffs and shores of Drostollorian border. The seas of the north freeze over-night, though the land fares a bit better. Still, temperatures can become suddenly rather dangerous as instant hypothermia can take place if one isn't in proper clothing, or perhaps if doused. As a result, these can be especially dangers on land if there was previously rain.
"Virosia herself casts down icy death on our home and you would claim that Drostollorians are living a high life? Meanwhile you suck down wine and have your peasantfolk with wooden cairnbraces feed you grapes. Bah!" -Targan Danesfolk
Origins Of Ice
The nightfrosts are legend to emenate from some old creation of Vulkjornn to the far north, in what is referred to as the Undrasulk, or the Frostforge. This place has never been witnessed, as all that seek it end up either lost at sea, or a victim of the nightfrost itself. Those that have spoken with Vulkjornn about its origins have been met with denial, confusion, or redirection by the spirit, saying that it must have been the creation of one of the others.
Cultural Impact
The Drostollorian region north of the Drostol Mountain's break deal with the nightfrost in one way or another, depending on just how north they are. Drostollor itself is as far north as it goes, while towns such as Yordin almost don't feel them. With temperatures suddenly dropping at night at any time of the year, Drostollorian agriculture is limited to what will grow with some tolerance for freezing temperatures. Thus, most crops are rather hardy, or at the very least largely grow beneath the earth.
Buildings in the region must be made with no glass on their northern face, as the wave of cold's immediate temperature shift has a habit of shattering them. Building materials that deal well with expanion and contraction are also favored.
The ice that forms on the shore can also unexpectedly ruin cargo transports leaving the region, trapping ships for hours or days depending on how severe the nightfrost was. As a result, the Drostollorians have developed many solutions for carving paths for ships out of their port. Icespears are a common implement, being smaller ships that can tug ships out of the ice and beyond, with the tools necessary to carve ice, normally using the labor of criminals or slaves.
A number of pillars have been constructed in the ocean, in a line stretching out into the sea. A watchman is posted as the braziers atop these pillars are lit about every night after it's been over a week since the last nightfrost. The watchman will see them extinguish one by one, and may warn the townsfolk before it strikes.
