The Black Rot
The Black Rot (aka The Rot, The Creeping Rot, The Withering) is a bacteria that eats flesh of living organisms. The Rot is of unknown origin but can be found in small quantities across Ümbria ususlly in swamps or bodies of water with limited circulation or inflow of fresh water. The Rot travels inside very small darkly colored capsules that protects the bacteria until it can be injested and begin its consumption of flesh. These capsules are too small to generally be noticed by any thirsty organism. After being injested and the capsule releases its contents, The Black Rot will travel around an organisms system until it takes hold somewhere in the body. Once attached to flesh, The bacteria begins to eat away at the flesh indefinitely. As it eats, the bacteria begins to multiply rapidly. The bacteria only eats specific parts of an organisms most notably leaving bones completely intact. The bacteria secretes a black residue that acts as a natural pain dampener. Affected organisms may not know they have been infected (due the the pain releaving residue) until they begin losing functions of the affected area or until The Rot has ate through the organisms skin leaving a blackened hole in the affected area leaving the bone underneath exposed often with little connective tissue still attached. Can casue maddness if the brain is an affected area or quick death if the affected area is a vital organ such as the heart of lungs.
Transmission & Vectors
Primarily found in murky still bodies of water and transmitted through injestion
Treatment
The only "treamtment" for The Black Rot is to seperate the affected area from the rest of the organism. This can only be achieved if the only affected area is attached to a not vital part of the organism or very close to the surface. Once removed, The Rot is should be burned to prevent any other organism from injesting it.
Prognosis
The Black Rot will consume an entire organism if left alone leaving only a skeleton behind.
Prevention
Avoid drinking dirty, unclear water without boiling first as in this heat capsules the Black Rot are contained in will breakdown and release the bacteria into the water killing them.
Cultural Reception
Withering Ones or Rotter are common terms for those affected (those affected to a great and visable degree) by The Rot and are avoided by most even though contracting The Rot is impossible without injestion. The general population are fearful of Rotters as it is a very unpleasent experience for the Withering One as well as those who view the person with blackend, disintegrating body parts. A common aspect of The Black Rot is that of maddness when the brain becomes affected further leading to the general fear of Rotters.
