Aarocokra

Adventurer of the Sky

The magnificent Aarocokra are not known for being adventurers. Many of their tribe would consider them to be insane, misfits or outcasts. However, their unique sense of self causes them to fly through the world with a sense of purpose and dedication. Many come down from the sky motivated by a desire to honor their ancient ties, others wish to seek revenge or protect themselves from the looming threat of their home. Others are misfits that just were different from the traditions of the tribes. One thing that each Aarocokra needs is bravery. Being from the skies makes going down into the land full of buildings and enclosed spaces blocking the wind, rain, and sunlight unnerving and frightening. It takes a lot of courage and bravery to get down on the ground ready to fight the next battle. They are refugees, scouts, and explorers in a strange world where their only true comfort is the sky itself.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Aarocokra is a bird-like humaoid with magnificent feathers and wings, and a head resembling an eagle or parrot. They have lean, lightweight bodies and typically range from 80-100 pounds. The skeleton is hollow and fragile, and wings anchor on a bony chest that provies some slight protection. Their lean legs extend out into talons. They have three fingers are each hand with a thumb. Their plumage is unique and that is how they identify one another.   Male Aarocokra have a more vibrant color to their plumage, such as red, yellow or orange. While Female Aarocokra have more of a brown or gray complexion.

Genetics and Reproduction

Once a year the males plumage is striking to get the attention from the female. T Females incubate the eggs and it takes about eight months to age.

Growth Rate & Stages

Shorter lifespan than humans they mature at the age of 3 and do not live beyond 30 years.

Ecology and Habitats

Aarocokra are most comfortable in the sky and can spend hours gliding on thermals. In the Plane of Air they are able to fly for months on the endless sky. When they need to land they prefer to live in high warm mountains atop tall trees.   Colonies of Aarocokra, or tribes, are built around a large open-roofed nest made of vines and the eldest with support from the cleric, leads the tribe. Tribe have around 30 individuals. Males hunt while feamles craft weapons and tools. Each tribe has a unique design that is shown in colorful banners or penannts to mark their hunting territory.   When they leave their colony they became more recluse or may have 3-6 individuals during flight.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Omnivores and known to eat fish, fruits, livestock and grains. When hunting for food they have no concept of property, but only take what they need and leave left-overs for others.

Behaviour

Aarocokra are quite hygienic and tend to their wings as soon as they land. They prefer to be near water so they can easily bathe. They have little interest in material wealth but do enjoy shiny objects from time to time. Their language is very unique as their speech is punctuated with chirps, which are synonymous with human facial expressions. It is quite easy to understand each other, but it's very difficult for other species to understand the chirps without knowing them for some time.   Aarocokra would not admit it, but claustrophobia is quite common. As they are used to the open sky it can be very unnerving to go into a building, and especially a cave. They are able to sleep in rooms with their group but would prefer to sleep outside in the open air. When it comes to caves the enclosed space can cause them to be abnormally quiet, and when faced with combat there might be a sense of panic, paralyzing terror, or breaking down.
