Shikigami
Mechanics & Inner Workings
By imbuing power and intent into the shikigami, an onmyouji (or other user of mystical arts) can basically create a mindless slave that will follow the specific instruction. Most shikigami are quite simplistic and are only capable of carrying out basic errands (and even then might still require some supervision). However, it is possible to create a highly functioning shikigami, provided it is given the appropriate instructions upon creation.
Regardless of how well made a shikigami is, it will always be loyal to its creator and its 'programming' cannot be corrupted.
Manufacturing process
The piece of paper is cut and folded into a human shape (or alternative shape if preferred). A seal is written on the front of the paper person in ink - the seal being unique to the onmyouji or person creating the shikigami. Power is then imbued into the paper along with intent. Specific instructions need to be passed onto a shikigami in order for it work properly and a slip of thought can be catastrophic.
The onmyouji has some control over the shikigami's final appearance. In some instances, having it remain as a paper doll is well enough. In the other extreme, they can be made to look like humans or animals, all but impossible to discern from the real thing based on appearance. This does, however, take a lot of energy at the time of crafting and quite often people will choose a middle ground; a figure that is humanoid in shape but quite obviousy not human.
Item type
Magical
Rarity
Shikigami are traditionally associated with Onmyouji but can be wielded by any user of the mystical arts. A certain level of skill is required in order to summon a shikigami, which is taught by the Bureau of Onmyou at their School of Onmyoudou.
Raw materials & Components
Traditionally, paper and ink are the materials of choice for constructing a shikigami, though there are recorded instances of other materials being used.
Mystical energy is required to give the shikigami life, the amount varying depending on the desired result.
Tools
A brush is required to transfer the ink to the paper but otherwise the only other tool required is an onmyouji.
