Summer Camp 2024 Pledge
Week 1 homework
I have uni assignments this week, so I might not finish all my SC24 homework assignments for this week. This will serve as a reminder and a starting point :)Assignment 1
This week's theme: changeConsider what kind of changes would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.Changes that would fit in would include:
- Gender ideals (a mostly historical shift, which Keeta explores)
- Gender identity definitions (again, mostly a historical shift for Keeta to explore)
- Changing locations, as the characters explore
- Changing vibes, going from light at the start of the story to more serious as Keeta works to understand faer gender identity and identity in Christ. Also going between awe of the environments the characters explore to focusing on gathering information
- Changing opinions and understandings, as Keeta learns more about the Arineans' culture and about faerself
Assignment 2
Prepare yourself: set your goalBased on how much time you have to write, decide how many prompts you'll go for during Summer Camp. Then, download the pledge document and fill it accordingly!I've decided that my goal will be the Silver Badge (16 prompts)
Assignment 3
Prepare your world: categories and tagsGet your categories and tags organized! No /s. My categories could honestly do with a little bit of tidying up. There's a lot of articles currently just under 'World Encyclopedia'. Although I generally add tags to every article as I write them, so the tags should be all good already. Update: done. I added a few sub-categories as well. Tags I'll use to mark articles written for SC24 are: #SC24, #prompt, #change, #refuge, #belief (and/or #beliefs), and #decay.
Assignment 4
For the older worlds: update the metaTake a look at your meta, primer, and any other high-level document and update it according to the current state of your world.I definitely need to flesh out my meta and update some things (such as checking world date). This is a note to self. Update: updated :)
Week 2 homework
Assignment 1
This week's theme: refugeConsider what kinds of refuge would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.
- The characters like to take refuge from change by spending time with each other and following their routines
- Keeta takes refuge in God from being challenged by the intimidating concept of identity
Assignment 2
Prepare yourself: find an accountability partnerFind a community—whether that’s our Discord server, Facebook Group, your RPG or friend group, or something else.I am already in the WA discord server, and I'm also in my uni's writing society's discord server. I'm not active on either though, so we'll see.
Assignment 3
Prepare your world: stylingFind ways to improve styling and layout in your world!I generally do keep my articles well-formated. I might change my theme (to either 'Bright Fantasy' or 'Deven Rue'), but I'll have to find/draw a background image cause I don't like the ones that come with the in-built themes.
Assignment 4
For the older worlds: any CSS upgrades? If you’re a CSS wizard, maybe take the time now to give it a polish!I do not know CSS, so I will not be doing that. Wait, no I lied, I will be doing that. I didn't like that the link colour in the theme 'Bright Fantasy' was yellow (I liked the basic red), so I copied and pasted some stuff from the CSS styling guide and picked a nice red to use.
Week 3 homework
Assignment 1
This week's theme: beliefConsider what kind of beliefs would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.Well since Keeta is the main character, there is a focus on faer religious beliefs and what fae believes about faer identity. It's also a fantasy, so there has to be some belief in what we might call magic, what with giant, glowing fungi and portals connected through the mycelial network of the Ofēlūs species. Although that might tie more into a suspension of disbelief for the reader.
Assignment 2
Prepare yourself: find your inspirations irlCreate a bank of inspirations! Quotes, music, description of experiences and shower thoughts, etc.See my pinterest board and spotify playlist. I've also been collecting ideas for future scenes in my notes app on my phone, including quotes and revelations I've had.
Assignment 3
Prepare your world: images gallery and mapsFind art and pictures that inspire you, and grab a map if you don't have one (and need one).I do already have a map (see below) which I drew myself with reference to the minecraft map (since I'm building the world in minecraft to help me visualise it better). It's very pretty :) I do want to add the minecraft map as a special layer though, so I might go do that. I've also been drawing artworks of the fungi to include in their articles (so far, I've done Keetaspore, Teal Cap, False Teal Cap, and Green Mushtree).
Assignment 4
For the older worlds: review your inspirationCheck your inspirations again. Are they still relevant? Can you find any that better represent the current state of your project?I will check :)
Week 4 homework
Assignment 1
This week's theme: decayConsider what kind of decay would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points. The Arinean Kingdom has fallen. Knowledge about the Arineans, their culture, their history, and even the Askeens' own past has dwindled or been lost entirely -- hence the existence of the Arinean Kingdom History Project, a team of people lead by Axl and Sven in an effort to recover and rediscover the past. Many of the ofēlūsle that were around during the reign of the Arinean Kingdom have started to decay and some, like the one at Pîver Erthunar, have fallen over. This also means that some of the Wrey Point connections are being lost -- increasing the urgency of exploring Arine, as many districts are inaccessible except through Wrey. New kinds/instances of decay that would fit in would be how Keeta starts to doubt what fae believes about faerself, and how the characters' energy and fortitude deteriorate as they face the change and uncertainty that comes with being out of routine, which eventually leads to (at least one of them) having a meltdown/shutdown.
Assignment 2
Prepare yourself: optimise your environmentIf you like special tea when you write, stock up for a month. Tidy your office, make a “do not disturb” sign, and think about any other last-minute strategies to optimize your writing space and time!We should have enough Russian Caravan (my designted writing tea) and various other teas. I've also got a stash of lollies. But the main problem for getting writing done is to not play minecraft, cause I've been hyperfixating on it instead of doing other things I need to/should do. Take a look at your author profile and pillar articles on your world and polish them! However, I am spending the first week of July at my Grandpa's and plan to focus on writing while I'm there. I'm going on a camp in the second week, so I won't get time for SC24 then -- although I actually find that that sort of environment works quite well for me; like, I get most of my writing (not worldbuilding though cause it requires my laptop) done on public transport. Maybe I won't get heaps of prompts completed, but I'm sure I'll make a lot of progress nonetheless.
Assignment 3
Prepare your world: review your homepageReview your world homepage to hook potential readers! To do:
- Find/draw a background image
- Add header images to articles? (especially Wrey Point and the fungi)
Assignment 4
For the older worlds: update your intro and author pageTake a look at your author profile and pillar articles on your world and polish them! Not sure what to add to my profile other than my Instagram. And I try to keep on top of updating articles when I change things, so I don't know off the top of my head which, if any, articles need some polishing.
