"Slobber and Teeth"
From afar, the Slobbernaught is a thing of beauty. Her sails shine white, her hull polished with the care of master shipwrights, her figurehead carved in noble detail. To unsuspecting eyes, she is no different than the proud merchantmen and privateers that glide across the seas. But something always feels amiss. A lantern burns too brightly, swaying with no wind. The bell tolls when no hand has touched it. A plank in the deck shudders like breathing flesh. The crew swears the ship watches. When her mimic side awakens, the Slobbernaught drops all pretenses of beauty. Wood splits into fangs, rigging writhes like tendrils, and the polished hull turns slick and wet with hunger. She becomes a predator masquerading as a vessel, luring sailors who admire her fine craftsmanship closer—only to devour them whole. The phrase among sea-folk is simple: “If a ship seems too fair, something’s amiss… and it’s likely her name is Slobbernaught.”
