Regardless of origin, wealth is the measure that determines one's position in society. It does not matter if one is a
human ,
vampire or
werewolf when it comes to the rich, who only care about their status over that of others. For most individuals, they will remain in the same social stratum for their entire lives, with the exception of a few lucky or particularly willful individuals.
The Poor
For individuals who are poor, life is filled with misery and hardship. Being long-lived does not spare one from poverty. Due to these hardships, it is not rare for the poor to lack formal education, and to be the first to suffer debilitating illnesses and early death. It is not uncommon to see an impoverished young
vampire girl aged only of 10 to seek work as a simple maid. Nor is it rare to see a young
human male of the same age work in the coal mines.
Unfortunately, society often seems to forget that the rich and powerful depend on these poor individuals for their comforts.
The Rich
The rich have the benefit of doing nearly anything they want. Most indulge in socialite activities, run their own corporations or enjoy their own private pass times. The high class enjoy luxurious homes and amenities such as beautiful gardens and servants to cater to their every need. They have the ability to influence governments to pass laws that benefit them economically or socially. Many of them believe they are morally superior because of their wealth.
It is important to note that many individuals of the upper echelons of society use their wealth and influence for the betterment of those who have not.
Old Money vs New Money
In the Old World, most of the rich come from aristocracy and nobility, being rich landowners who inherited their wealth over countless generations. Old money often has a bloody origin through war and conquest. In contrast, most of the wealthy in the New World stems from industrialists and visionaries who committed resources and capital to the right technology at the right moment. It often is a source of jealousy, resentment and outright snobbery by arrogant nobles who believe their birthright makes them superior to everyone else, including these new economical power houses.
