Legend of the Punished Muugalu

The Legend of the Punished Muugalu is a legend that originates in Guntartar mythology. It tells about a giant aurochs sized man-eating monster that protected mankind from the wrath of the primal dragon that lived in the clouds above the mountains and descended to ravage the earth and eat it's inhabitants. A muugalu looks like a fire breathing centaur with the head of an aurochs, four arms, a lion's legs, eagle wings and a serpentine tail with a sword blade for an end.

Summary

600 years after his creation, man began to spread over the earth. He warred with and defeated many creatures that stood in his path; the midgets, the manderthals and the centaurs held but had to give give way while all other creatures that lived in man's domain were forced to submit. Many large and monstrous creatures however, didn't submit and perished. Then, the Guntartar people, who were but a small tribe back then, were given the gift of the horse by the goddess Hunae, and they started to distinguish themselves in the world herding animals and riding horses. Subsequently, mankind also began to war against itself since there were now horses to fight over as well as women, and mankind couldn't resist the allure of fighting against itself anymore. As these wars progressed, Baatar, the god of war, got stronger. Around this time, Goktu the rhino, one of the primal beast gods that helped create the world, told Baatar that he was still stronger than him even though Baatar had grown strong from drinking the blood shed in war. Baatar then fought with Goktu to the death over it and won because his mother Hunae helped him cheat by giving him a javeline. All this noise waked the sleeping primal dragon, the same dragon that helped create the world along with the other beast gods among others, though he tried to go back to sleep. Meanwhile, a herd of savage centaurs found Goktu's corpse and started to feed on it. The primal magic changed them and turned them into muugalu. The muugalu then proceeded to try to conquer the steppe and ate whatever stood in their wake. Human children were especially appealing to their palate and they then ditched their plans of conquest and started to eat people en masse. The grief and screams were too much for the Primal Dragon to bear and he couldn't go back to sleep, so he went to investigate. He saw that the peaceful world he helped create was now barbaric and full of wars and he saw that Goktu had been slain and feasted upon. He then vowed that he would ravage and destroy this corrupt world and create a new one so that he could sleep in it in peace.   However, there was a muugalu who was especially evil and terrible. He was the worst of them all and loved eating grown men alive in front of their wives and children while hearing them all scream in horror and grief before eating them to. One faithful day, he had a baby brother who was born dead and he ate him as his father watched. His father got so infuriated with him that he took 2 bull elephant femurs in his four hands and beat him with each of them 7 times. The punished muugalu fled his herd and tried to pity himself by torturing and eating humans. However, his father's beatings knocked more sense into his head than expected. this meant that he became merciful and couldn't behave as he did anymore. Instead, he started wandering around and protecting mankind.   Once The Punished Muugalu saw the awake and furious Primal Dragon while lingering with some Guntartars. The dragon was going to kill them, but the muugalu attacked him. the primal magic in the muugalu put him on par with the enraged dragon, but he still couldn't best him in battle, so they raged on until they were exhausted and had to rest. Until that moment, the gods were mostly unaware about what was happening in the world because they didn't really care and in the the past 50 years that the muugalu were on their rampage, they were too busy arguing over whether or not Baatar cheated in the duel or played by the book. However, the noise coming from the fight between the dragon and the muugalu drew their attention. As a "neutral" party, one of the gods acted as arbiter for a compromise between the two so the gods could get back to arguing. After both parties spoke, it was offered that the exhausted primal dragon would repair the damage caused in the fight and go back to sleep in exchange for the death of the muugalu he was fighting and the banishment of all the others to an isolated world of their own that the dragon would help create. The parties were forced to agree and the compromise was put into action, but not before the dragon vowed that one day will come when he will destroy the world after being woken up and nothing short of death will stop him. Since then, the dragon has been sleeping soundly in the clouds above the mountains and hasn't woken up since he was completely and utterly exhausted.
