G6PD
G6PD is a genetic disease in which the affected person lacks an enzyme called G6PD. The result is that their red blood cells are fewer but larger and that they are resistant to malaria because the parasite has trouble with these weird red blood cells. Another side affect of the condition is that the absence of the enzyme means that their body can't neutralize a toxin found in broad beans (found in the East Hu-Balai). The people in the 15ROS wouldn't be able to diagnose it until around the 21st century A.B via genetic studies. Before that the only way to know was by poisoning with broad beans. As a result, if you came from a region where it was common you avoided broad beans, and if you didn't, you assumed you didn't have it.
Causes
A genetic mutation that occured in the body at the first stages of development or that the mutation was recieved from the parents' genes.
Symptoms
Can get seriously sick or die from eating broad beans.
Treatment
Untreatable.
Affected Groups
The Berini and Ardallan ethnic groups are well known for having a large percentage of affected people because malaria is common in the Berinus basin in areas of standing water. The climate in the region is ideal and the presence of Anophelese mosquitoes makes this an annoyance to farmers (most have the disease and are unaffected). The tribes that live in the marshes by the sea in the north like the Romi and some of the Vessani are known to have around 70% of their population affected.
The Ardallans, a Fren-Chitali tribe closely related to the Berini and speak a dialect of a different Fren-Chitali language that can be understood by the speakers of the lowest Berinus Fren-Chital dialect belt. Namely, the Romi, Vessani and Remi tribes.
Cultural Reception
The people in the 15ROS wouldn't be able to diagnose it until around the 21st century A.B without poisoning people first. As a result, if you came from a region where it was common you avoided broad beans, and if you didn't, you assumed you didn't have it. The whole broad bean thing had many bizarre explanations before the real one was discovered (The Remi tribe a bit less because they come from the opposite bank of the Berinus river).
