Berini Military (80 A.B - 543 A.B)
The Berini Emperor Mario II reformed the Berini Empire's military structure as he saw that the empire was quickly outgrowing it. So, he divided the military into 5 armies. Each army had about 1 million soldiers and an additional 200,000 logistics personnel. In addition to the general military coat of arm (a fire breathing golden crocodile on a green background flanked by an iron sword and a bronze shield), each army had it's own standard and was divided into tetrarchies commanded by high-ranking officers called tetrarchs. Each tetrarchy had it's own substandard (a variation of the universal army standard to identify the tetrarchy) and was essentially a fully functional army. From there down the structure was designed so that commanders had control of their units and could act on initiative when needed, but couldn't do whatever they wanted as the higher ranking officers held power over those units as well. This meant that any unit could adapt to the situation even without a general's direct involvement without having to worry about losing control over it. Things like exploiting gaps in a phalanx that weren't noticed, using hidden passages that were shown by local people that weren't noticed by reconnaissance, etc.
The first two armies were campaigning armies. This meant that they got a good and steady pay from the government and were tasked with campaigning and conquering and launching preemptive strikes and counter-attacks and the like. The other three armies were the defending armies. Unlike the campaigning armies, the defending armies weren't so much of a professional army but more like an organized militia. These soldiers were located in garrisons, fortresses, along roads and frontiers and watchtowers. Their purpose was to serve as a passive armed force in populated areas to strengthen the imperial presence without being to imposing and to defend those regions and the empire from external threats like invasions and internal threats like rebellions. These soldiers received little governmental pay and had to work locally to earn money as they were supposed to mingle in their areas of deployment for 2 years before being rotated to another location. This caused the campaigning armies to be more loyal to their generals and the defending armies to be more loyal to the people and the state.
The armies have a diverse population meant to draw the different imperial populations closer to each other to prevent civil wars. These diverse units are also equipped with iron or steel weapons and armor that changed and advanced throughout the ages.
Structure
At the head is the Emperor who can assume command of 3 armies and the Nobles' ministry that could assume command of 2 armies commanded by a person of their choice. The next rank is the Army Master who can assume command of an entire Army (1.2m, 1.6m during the 2nd, early to mid 3rd and 4th and 5th centuries A.B). Beneath him is the Tetrarch who commands a quarter of an Army known as a Tetrarchy (300k, 400k during the 2nd, early to mid 3rd and 4th and 5th centuries A.B). Beneath that is the Trigeneralus who commands about a quarter of the Tetrarchy (75k, 100k during the 2nd, early to mid 3rd and 4th and 5th centuries A.B). Beneath him is the Generalus who commands 25,000 people. Below that is the rank of Pentamiliarion who commands a Pentamiliary (5,000 people). The rank below that, the Miliarion who commands a Miliary (1,000 people). The rank beneath that is the Tricenturion who commands a Tricentury (300 men), the remaining 100 are an Elite century (a century of hardened veterans) who are basically a Century that isn't commanded by a tricenturion as their centurion (the Elite Centurion) has equal authority to a Tricenturion who is directly commanded by the milarion. Next is the Centurion who commands a Century (100 men). Last comes the smallest unit, the Decimere, a unit of ten people commanded by the Decimerian. All the numbers here are factored in with the logistics personnel included. From the Miliary down, the units are specialized. Meaning, a Miliary of engineers is made up of engineers only and doesn't have any naval or cavalry units.
Within each unit, 20% of the men are noncombatant logistics personnel. They are in charge of resupplying, moving supplies, distributing supplies, map making, etc.
