Prosil Religion
This is to provide goals for both, Player (Gameplay) and their Hero (Narrative.) The Piety system provides actual game benefits that a player will have to pursue during the game, even if they do not have a religious class. There is plenty of role-playing choices that can be made by heroes who wish to die in a state of Favor, dealing with the desires of gods, and political clout, by choosing this religion.
The Prosil religion is the oldest and widest range religion on Dolg, shaping the landscape and history in nearly every corner of the world. The world itself is called Dolg because of this religion. Dolg is translated to “Debt.” Ironically, this combination of age and range has developed contradicting aspects; highly evolved dogma while extremely unorganized.
Tenants & Practice/TRIBUTARY: The core belief/doctrine is that the gods give you everything and your thanks is expected. Dismissive attitudes of the favors provided by the gods (or claiming your talents are the reason for your success) is not a sin, but produces disapproval by the gods. In Dolg, the gods favor and disapproval actually will manifest as a “law of nature.” Although there is so much more expanded dogma that cannot be covered here, these are common practices resulting from them:
- If you are successful-Give the god it’s due tribute; if you failed-find a god to give tribute.
- Dying in a state of Favor: Each god has their own heaven in the outer-planes and for a Prosilites’ soul to find a heaven in the afterlife they needs that god’s favor. If no god claim/favor’s the Prosilites’ soul, then the soul is banished to the Shadowland. Of course, gods that you have upset during your life, might take an active roll deigning this divine transition. This deathbed grace varies on pantheons and the gods within those pantheons; Prosilites are highly motivated to be in a state of favor with the god whom will allow them entrance to that god’s heaven.
- Status through Piety: There is an obsession between Prosilites about who has the most piety/favor from the gods or god. After all, the gods judge whom to give success or failure. Life/Death or Success/failure doesn’t mater on the most skilled, but the most loyal/piety to the god that owns the portfolio. Especially, those with power.
- The Gods makes things Personal: As Prosilites gains favor or disapproval from the gods, eventually a few gods will take notice and they will offer; either redemption or reverence. The god will ask for them to do something, specific or vague to gain the piety that the Prosilite needs. The Prosil religion isn’t one of those that conveniently answers prayers with what the worshiper wants.
- Embodying a God: With enough Piety and favor from a god, Prosilites can become an avatar of a god, possible embodiment, or offspring. This is only proven through succeeding through the trails of piety set before the individual. Many of the powerful, want this.
Structure
There is no real organization and structure varies base on Pantheons and then local regions. Typically, the Prosil religion embeds itself on the strongest pollical societal group, then encourages that group to branch into some form of religious class. The Desyatina Republic's nobility secured themselves with their Prosil version, while the Malenkey land of farmers, craftsman, and poor attached themselves with a similar but wildly different in results.
The tradition is that, the one with the most Piety (favor) from the gods, is the authority; but the Prosil religion has been around so long that there are several different ways to circumnavigate this tradition.
