Session 32: Against the Scro Report
General Summary
The Rat Pack had traveled for about a week to return to Toril. Once there, they were met by Astral Elves of the Imperial Fleet, who let them know where to march. They were expected to act as the vanguard, breaching the town walls, opening the waterway for the elven ships, and securing the munitions that the Scro were transporting.
The Forest Ambush
On their march to the town, they passed through an ancient forest. Although the foliage was dense, a clear-cut road led through it. They came to a portion where steep ridges rose twenty feet over the road on either side. Stinkbreath and E.L.B.O.W. were the first to spot the ambushers, but the rest of the party was surprised by the sudden attack.Goblins of an earthy green hue attacked from both sides, using blowguns to unleash a flurry of poisoned darts. A shaman forced vines out of the road and attempted to entangle them where they stood. Fortunately, most of the party was able to avoid the vines.
Glebnor climbed onto one of the ridges to face off against three goblins with their axe. In the process, they went into a blinding rage, attacking anything and everything near them. Seeing Glebnor enraged and knowing the curse of the axe, most of the party began to take cover to avoid them.
Azid walked up the side of another ridge and attempted to cast a firebolt at one of the shamen. Somehow, the spell backfired, and he was forced to swap minds with the goblin. While both were confused, Azid could compose himself quickly enough to have Cruella grapple his body. The goblin in Azid's body tried to stab at Cruella to escape, but it didn't work.
Seething for a new target, Glebnor quickly made their way across the ridge to the nearest person: Cruella. With two swings of her axe, she destroyed the zombie slave, releasing the goblin-controlled Azid.
The Azid-controlled goblin threw a bundle of rats into Glebnor's face to distract them. While this happened, Azid's body fled into the forest. Glebnor smashed the pile of vermin and then ran up to the goblin that Azid was in and, with one brutal crash, split his head in twain with her axe. Azid ceased to exist for but a few seconds when he regained consciousness back in his body.
Everyone was hesitant to regroup, given the brutal rampage that Glebnor had just gone on. Still convinced no one had any reason to be afraid, Glebnor coaxed them out of hiding. The experience visibly shook Azid. He reprimanded the plasmoid, but they seemed unphased by it all.
The party, remembering they still had a job, resumed their march towards the town.
To the River
When the party emerged from the forest, they found farmland, and in the distance, they saw the town walls where fighting was going on. Realizing they were late for the attack, E.L.B.O.W. lamented that he hated being late for things.Archers from the walls shot arrows at them as they moved across the farmland. Azid and Stinkbreath successfully picked off a few, but they were quickly replaced. So, under the volleys of arrows, the party raced for the walls. Along the way, Azid cast a fireball on the gate to try and break it open. While it didn't open, he did significant damage to it. Glebnor reached it first and, with their axe, they breached the gate.
An elven captain approached them at the gate and told them that the eastern wall, where the river passed through the town, the Scro had put up a chain blocking the entry of the elvish ships. The Rat Pack had to go and lower the chain.
Azid cast polymorph on Geasle, transforming them into a tyrannosaurus rex. Geasle burst through the town, and the rest of the group followed. They were ambushed again in the streets. This time, they were attacked by pale orange goblins in plate armor. These goblins were significantly more challenging than the green ones from the forest. Still, they were no match for a tyrannosaurus.
The party reached the eastern wall and first encountered actual Scro marines. Although they looked like typical orcs, the Scro were methodical and organized in their assault. They showed greater intelligence than the regular orcs. Under fire from goblin arrows, Azid ordered his four zombie slaves to go and lower the chains. That did not matter, though, because Geasle just went and ripped the chains out of the wall with his powerful dinosaur jaws.
With the chains down, the ships began to move into town. The remaining Scro and goblins began to retreat further into the town. Geasle returned to his regular form, and the group held up in a small warehouse as they waited for reinforcements from the elves.
The War Captain
Not long after they took a short rest in the warehouse, another captain of the elves approached them. They had located the Scro War Captain, and he was guarding the munitions until they could get an evac. The Rat Pack was ordered to go in and eliminate the Scro and secure the munitions. At the only entrance to the building where the War Captain was said to be, Azid polymorphed Geasle again. This time, the ghoul turned into a giant ape. While this was happening, Stinkbreath cracked the door open and peeked in. He was immediately shot by the War Captain, brandishing a strange weapon that hit metal balls.
The party charged in, aiming directly for the War Captain. As they did, a war priest revealed himself and let loose a lightning bolt that struck a few of the Rat Pack. Marines also leaped out of hiding to attack them as they moved further into the warehouse. Geasle made it to the War Captain and battered him with his massive ape fists, eventually killing him. The rest of the party was able to take out the marines and nearly destroyed the war priest. The priest, seeing his comrades killed, decided to surrender. He allowed Stinkbreath to put manacles on him.
Azid had his zombies then bar the door to ensure no one else came in. The greedy ratfolk looked at the crates of munitions. He made no secret that he wanted to take some of the goods himself.
