This is the continuation of Session 441 – The Black Tree.
As Spring comes to an end, Eryna Manor is visited by a stranger. The slightly sleazy man wants to speak with Sir Odin, the bailiff of Eryna. He introduces himself as Gorin of Leba, Jr. His father is Gorin of Leba, a merchant in Sarkum, of whom the heroes uncovered evidence that he collaborated with the invading Rethemi army and the church of Agrik decades ago. “My father asked me to pass on a message,” he says. “The people we spoke about have returned.” Gorin Jr. does not have any other details; his father was acting mysteriously but stressed that it was urgent.
The heroes are aware that Gorin Sr. had previously been in contact with the mad Ivashu summoning priest of Ilvir Xantosa and his troll henchman, Shageiros. Xantosa plans to raise the slain crab, Titian Obsidapor.
The party makes their way to Sarkum, dropping Gorin off at the City of Aleath to enjoy its various entertainments.
Location: On the road East of Hebon Keep in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 1 – Ambush
While travelling through the foreboding Ternu Heath, dangerous foes lurk beneath the soft, acidic earth. Three massive Ivashu resembling centipedes, each with three heads, ambush the party, proving to be quite a challenge. Odin is cornered, and one of the Ivashu attacks with its multiple heads, biting into him from both sides and trying to tear him apart. He passes out from the pain and shock.
These vicious aberrations severely injure Abaddon and Edelina, and Remy is forced to take to the air for safety. Nonetheless, nightmare creatures are eventually destroyed.
Location: In the Barony of Sarkum in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 2 – The Collaborator
The heroes sneak into Sarkum Township and have a discreet talk with the merchant Gorin of Leba Senior. Gorin is worried and explains that he has been secretly approached by two workers from the Obsini Quarry. These individuals, who claimed to worship Agrik, were aware of his past collaborations and used him for supplies and information. The supplies he gave are enough for 8 to 10 people. Gorin worries that if his past were discovered by the locals, he might be hanged as a traitor. With this information, the heroes then visit the Stoneworkers' camp, located near Obsini quarry.Part 3 –Stoneworkers
Late afternoon, the party arrives at the camp, where workers and masons are socializing and eating. Abaddon shifts into bird form while Odin sneaks in and eavesdrops on conversations. Meanwhile, the smooth-talking Remy and Edelina approach the camp and talk to the head mason.
The camp consists of two groups, and Odin detects a hint of hostility between them. The men at the back are newcomers, and although strong and imposing, they are not as weathered as the men who meet with Remy. Remy, advised by Edelina, loudly announces that he wants a plaque carved from the quarry’s distinctive red granite to commemorate a religious parable. One in which the god Agrik cowardly attempted to ambush the goddess Larani. Larani proves to be a far too dangerous opponent, slicing off several of Agrik’s claws in the process.
Remy continues playing the role of a loud, opinionated, and devoted Larani worshiper, repeatedly insulting and demeaning Agrik. The concealed Odin and Abaddon observe the second group of workers, are growing increasingly agitated. At dusk, Remy departs the camp, and Odin overhears the men grumbling among themselves, deciding to “Teach the bastard a lesson.” They leave the camp planning to waylay Remy.
Part 4 -Ambushing the Ambushers
The heroes set up an ambush for the so-called stoneworkers. The eight of them are caught off guard, but the men prove to be skilled warriors, expertly wielding clubs and stone-working tools, fighting with military precision. Odin is convinced these are Copper Hook warriors. And their leader displays symbols of the gods Agrik and mutters divine incantations. He is a powerful priest hurling Balefire at the heroes. Although they outnumber the ambushers, the villains are not wearing armor, wield inferior weapons, and are therefore easy to hit. They are soon defeated; the spell-casting priest is dangerous, but is encircled and slain.
Examining the dead, the heroes find that all of the men have concealed Agrikian regalia. What are their plans, and how do they relate to Xantosa’s scheme to raise the slain crab Titan Obsidapor?
To be continued.
