Session 6: In Memoriam Report
General Summary
The following week, after the events at the mine, the Peacekeepers recuperated from their injuries. A band of miners and other townsfolk led by a kobold miner named Beeg returned to the mines and cleared the remaining monsters. They went to confront the cave goblins, but King Flemgut had already retreated far deeper into the caves along with his horde.
When they were well enough to leave the infirmary, they held a proper funeral for Mario, followed by a celebration of his life at The Tall Stone. Many of the locals attended to pay their respects to the fallen Peacekeeper.
Beeg insisted on helping the Peacekeepers further, so Deputy Taldahk assigned him to assist the group. However, he did stress to keep in mind that Beeg was not an official Peacekeeper. The group seemed happy to have him join.
The Blue Caps
Deputy Taldahk had a new assignment for the Peacekeepers. Madam Vitla of Scales and Flesh came to him with complaints about patrons coming in high on dust. They were behaving erratically, threatening staff and customers, and in some cases even becoming violent. Taldahk has also been under pressure from the Mayor to rid the town of dust once and for all. Taking all of that into account, Taldahk tasked the group with finding the source of the narcotic and getting rid of it.While most of the group had no idea what dust was or what it even did, Galerina did. She told them that dust was a blue powder made from blue cap mushrooms that grew deep underground. The narcotic would be snorted and lead to hallucinations, paranoia, and erratic behavior. Sometimes, users would even become extremely violent. Producing, selling, and using dust was not necessarily illegal, but it was often associated with criminals.
They began their investigation at Scales and Flesh. It was a brothel owned and operated by a red kobold named Madam Vitla. She was relieved that the Peacekeepers were investigating her claims and was forthcoming with information. She told them that one patron, in particular, had become violent and destroyed some furniture before being physically thrown out of the establishment. His name was Bashar Midask, and he had a thing for a dwarf woman named Ginny.
Ginny told them he was a miner, although Beeg did not recognize the name. She told them that his dust habit had progressively worsened over the last few weeks. She also told them that he had gambling debts and was known for being a violent thug, although he had never raised a hand to her. When asked how often he would come to see her, she told them he would go regularly every weekend.
At the mining camp, Beeg learned that Bashar owed another human named Bob Dillon a large sum of silver. He also found out which shack belonged to Bashar. They waited until he was done with his shift and at home before confronting him.
Beeg knocked on the door, and Bashar answered with blue dust under his nose. He saw the Peacekeepers and immediately punched Beeg in the face. They quickly subdued him and took him back inside the shack. There, they found some dust and began to interrogate him. They tricked him into giving up his source of dust: a green kobold named Skeevesy, that loitered around the back of the schoolhouse.
The party went and cornered the kobold. Beeg used a bit of force to intimidate the scrawny kobold. Skeevsey quickly gave up Camden, his supplier, and the location of his cabin outside of town. When asked why he would linger behind the schoolhouse in a trenchcoat to sell dust, he said it was to attract new customers. With that, they took him to the courthouse and threw him in jail. They knew he would probably be released eventually, but that did not matter to them.
Rocco led the party with Skeevsey's directions, but he soon became lost. Nonna tried leading the group, got them back on track, and found the small cabin in the woods. As the party discussed approaching the situation, Vincenzo decided to scout around the cabin. Unfortunately, he did not see the hunting trap and stepped right into it. Managing not to scream, he pried the trap off and limped his way back to the party to warn them of the traps.
Rocco disguised himself to look like Skeevsey and went to approach the front door. He did not see the hunting trap either and stepped right into it. He screamed, alerting the people inside the cabin.
Camden called out, asking why he was there and if he was alone. Rocco did his best to lie, but it was not convincing enough for the paranoid Camden, who ordered his men to kill everyone.
The party made a mad dash for the cabin as crossbow bolts shot at them from arrow slits in the cabin. More bandits came from around the back of the cabin to flank them. Nonna handled one side of the attack while Rocco handled the other. Galerina took care of some of the archers while Vincenzo provided support. Beeg busted the door to the cabin in and ran straight for Camden.
While almost all the bandits were killed, Nonna took three prisoners. They rushed into the cabin to help Beeg, but he had the situation under control despite his rage, landing a killing blow on Camden. After he calmed down, he realized what he had done and apologized to the Peacekeepers for killing Camden, knowing that they probably could have questioned him. The group did not seem worried since they had three other prisoners.
Investigating the room, they found ten pounds of unprocessed blue cap mushrooms on a table and a ledger written in some code. They also found a chest, which, when opened, revealed to be a stash of coins and gemstones. Rocco was quick to confiscate that and divide it up among the group. They also found white paper bags for distribution. Each bag had a black lotus stamped on it.
