The Memorial Chamber.
Cassidy sneezed and Ajani disappeared as the party entered the large room. A dozen statues of ancient elemental warriors stood on pedestals in this chamber, each surrounded by a semicircle of candles, partially melted and unlit. Four pedestals were much larger than the rest. Three of these held great statues, depicting warriors of air, earth, and water. The fourth great pedestal stood empty adorned only by a plaque. Two violet orbs hovered 4 feet off the ground, one near the north wall and one near the south where they entered. A 17-foot-tall elemental stood over a smaller statue to the south. He was wrapped in a roiling cloak, and under his cowl, his eyes sparked lightning blue.
The Elemental turned to the party; it looked upset because the party disturbed it. The elemental told them harshly, “Leave.” The party tried to claim they had an appointment with the Ash Queen, but the elemental didn’t see any escort. The clouds below his cloak grew darker and the lightning eyes brightened. Gazlowe tried to intimidate the elemental by telling it that they had killed Meskrit and should be left to pass. The elemental waved his hands and the candles around the 3 large statues illuminated. 3 more elementals emerged from the large statues.
Elemental battle in the memorial chamber.
The elementals they faced were the Oracle of Storms, an Essence of Storms, Essence of Tides and a Force of Earth. The Oracle of storms attacked Juan and nearly killed him with 2 strikes. The Force of Tides floated across the floor and hurt Isabella before she raged. The force of tides released steam, but it didn’t affect the party too much. Bird attacked one of the statues while Juan healed himself. Isabella raged and attacked the Essence of Tides. The essence of storms shot a lightning bolt at Isabella and then tried to strike Juan but missed. Seften cast spirit guardians. Cassidy focused her whips on the big guy and made it vulnerable to cold damage and bloodied it.
Gazlowe followed bird’s lead and shattered two of the small statues near the big Oracle of Storms. The water elemental soaked Isabella and made her vulnerable to lightning. The party continued to fight. Juan and bird destroyed the statue of the air elemental, and the essence of storms vanished. Isabella went reckless with her flame tongue sword and focused on the big Oracle of storms that was bloodied. Cassidy finished off the Oracle of storms with her cold whips. Gazlowe pounded on the earth elemental statue. Juan finished it off and the Force of earth vanished. Seften destroyed the last elemental by casting Toll the Dead.
Searching the room
With all the elemental guardians destroyed, the party examined the empty pedestal where clearly a stature once stood. There was a plaue that read, “Kitseth the Oldest Flame.” They discovered that the statures were all tributes to ancient elementals that fought against mortals. Before leaving, the party took a short rest. Isabella destroyed the rest of the statues. After the rest, Cassidy touched one of the teleportation orbs, but it didn’t function. She then tried the names of the different elemental champions and when she said “Kitseth” it worked, and she was transported away. The others followed.
A study
The party found themselves in a study with two desks, the purple orb from which they came and a small floating green orb. The room was a semicircle and on one side there was a door going south to the 2nd half of the circle. Searching the desks they found three handwritten tomes containing the rare history of long-dead elementals, 6 ruby-inlaid hand axes and a key. Cassidy took the key, and it fit into the door leading south.
The Queen’s Chamber
Opening the door, they walked into what was clearly the Queen’s chamber. In the east side of the room was a 15-foot teleportation circle. In the south stood 2 statues, one of a blazing fire elemental (Kitseth) and the other statue of the Queen of Ash. The north wall bent around a circle carved into the floor. The ceiling directly above had a trap door in it. In the room was also a wardrobe and a simple rug.
Gazlowe took notes on the teleportation circle and Cassidy and Isabella looked in the wardrobe finding common ceremonial robes and clothing for Atæshia. The party went back to examine the green orb in the study. They discovered that they can use it to cast the sending spell without expending a spell slot. Cassidy used the orb to try to contact the Ash queen telling her they have more information about Kitseth but there was no response. Gazlowe used the orb to send a message to Eversus saying “You Suck!” Isabella went back to the wardrobe and stated trying on the queen’s clothing. Gazlowe sent a message to the White Lady: “The Red Lady was always hotter than you!” Gazlowe sent a message to Revalor, “Just wanted to check in…” Revalor responded briefly and seemed concerned that Gazlowe contacted him. They party continued to play with the orb sending crank calls to various people, not realizing that the Queen of Ash was listening in on the calls. Gazlowe sent one last message to Niptu, “I know where Abby is, let’s talk.”
The Queen of Ash
While the party was making crank calls, Atæshia grabbed her minions and came down in the elevator in her chamber. Only Cassidy and Isabella were in the queen’s chamber when she arrived with some of her minions, a force of Blood, a force of Iron and 5 air elementals. The Queen saw Isabella wearing one of her ceremonial robes and turned Isabella into a cloud of Ash, “Poof.” She punched Cassidy twice hurting her with radiant damage. Seften cast a 6th level spirit guardians and ran up to her.
Gazlowe heard the noise and ran into the queen’s chamber. He then cast Bigby’s hand to try to hold her in place, but she resisted. Juan’s aura of protection protected everyone from many of the elemental’s abilities. The Force of Iron attacked Seften, but Seften wasn’t fazed too badly. Cassidy branded the Queen of Ash. The first 5 minions swarmed on Jaun and 5 more arrived. Juan killed 3 of the minions. Isabella failed to make her constitution save and as she turned back into her gnomish form was reduced to 1 HP. Isabella downed her potion of superiorior healing and started raging.
The Ash Queen teleported to the other side of the room, and because of Cassidy’s brand took some psychic damage. She shot 3 radiant bolts at Seften but only landed 1 blow. Seften cast power word fortify and fortified Isabella and Cassidy. Gazlowe focused his attention on the Ash queen but didn’t hurt her too badly. The Force of Iron continued to focus on Seften but he too wasn’t very effective. The Force of blood focused on Cassidy. The air elementals that arrived in waves went after Seften but wound up exploding because of his Spirit Guardians. Juan channeled divinity and tried to frighten the elementals but they were immune to being frightened. The two air elementals near him however were destroyed.
Isabella landed a critical blow on the Force of Blood leaving it bloodied. The Ash queen turned Gazlowe into a cloud of ash and then hit Juan. Seften cast command to have all three creatures grovel, but Atæshia resisted. Gazlowe reformed from the cloud of ash and because of his strong constitution he only suffered some necrotic damage.
The Ash Queen yelled “Enough!” and released a torrent of primordial anguish dealing necrotic damage to everyone. At this point Cassidy, Bird, Juan and Isabella were all badly bloodied and Gazlowe and Seften were hurt. Cassidy attacked the queen with her whips. The minions attacked Seften and died. Bird and Juan attacked the Ash queen. Cassidy removed her resistance to radiant damage making Juan’s smite more effective. An invisible Essence of Mist appeared and attacked Seften leaving him bloodied. Atæshia struck Gazlowe hurting him even more.
Seften saves the party
Seeing everyone in bad shape, Seften cast Mass Heal, restoring everyone back to maximum health. Gazlowe then punched Atæshia and bloodied her. The battle continued with everyone continuing to take damage and continuing to deal damage. The mist focused on Isabella and badly hurt her with the one thing she can’t resist, psychic pain. Isabella however continued to attack the Force of Blood leaving it critical. Atæshia continued to hit Gazlowe and Gazlowe punched back leaving her badly bloodied. Cassidy struck the Ash queen twice and left her near death. Juan struck her twice and she disappeared in a puff of ash.
The other elementals continued to fight to their deaths. Gazlowe killed the force of blood. As it fell, Atæshia was reformed! Gazlowe punched her hard and she went back down. Juan started eating the ash and Cassidy prepared to cast Chill touch if she re-formed. Gazlowe killed the Force of Iron and Atæshia formed again. Cassidy hit her with Chill touch twice. The 2nd time she went down. The party killed the minions, and she came back. Juan killed her again. The Mist hit Isabella and knocked her out. Isabella’s relentless rage brought her back with 1 HP. Isabella then killed the mist and Atæshia returned one more time. Isabella then turned to Atæshia and killed her for the final time.
With Cassidy’s help, the party learned that for the next 100 years, whenever any moderately powerful celestial, humanoid or elemental die in this room Atæshia will once again return to life.
