Session 7: The Shape of Things Report

General Summary

The party, having just returned to Donborough, headed to the Half Pint Tavern (sans Skreech, who had business with Rigak the blacksmith) to finally relax after a week's worth of adventuring. Upon arriving in the tavern, they found Finton Berrybottle in good spirits as an old friend was in town to visit. Osrick Riverhands, Rinrin's mentor from Quilport, who was reading a book by the fireplace. Rinrin immediately made a beeline for her mentor, embracing him and bombarding him with several questions. Brakmat, in the meantime, wordlessly pushed Osrick out of the way of his spot on the rug in front of the fireplace, then curled up on the floor to rest.   Osrick informed his apprentice that he was in Donborough lying low, as both of them were wanted by the Kopa Drea and Longclaw Syndicate. He informed her that her family is alive, her mother is being taken care of, but her brothers are enslaved by high-ranking members of the Kopa Drea and her father has been sold to the pirates of the Silver Corsairs. Osrick says he's working for an organization outside Quilport that's working on wresting control of the city away from the current ruling class.   After Rinrin informed Osrick of all that had happened to her since she left Quilport, handing him the Obscuris Cosmology. Though he couldn't decode the arcane cipher, he was able to read the first few pages of the tome, informing the group that the book once belonged to a powerful mage named Petrarch Vitroni. He explained that Petrarch had performed a ritual which was supposed to make him ascend to Godhood, but instead caused a cataclysm that "broke" magic. This interested Brakmat, who questioned the halfling for a bit more information regarding this ritual and how magic was broken. He couldn't provide more information beyond the fact that certain magics no longer worked, including those that kept floating mage-cities aloft.   Osrick also mentioned that it was strange to hear of the ratlings changing their devotion to another God without some sort of punishment. He invited Rinrin to join him at the docks later that evening, where he taught her more of the nature of magic; how it was discovered by dragons, stolen by the God Karth the Lion, and given to mortals in the form of the Primal Song. He helped Rinrin attune her staff, causing arcane power to flow through the runes she'd been carving in it.   He mentioned to Rinrin that he would be in Mekkisir in two weeks' time, as he had business in Tidefang territory. He mentioned seeking him out at the Green Dragon Inn shoudl they want to help him out on his mission.   Rossira Berrybottle approached Droknar asking him if he was still being followed. She said she hoped the group would stay in town as she felt safer with them around. Finton mentioned he was considering moving the family to his wife's hometown of Lyredil, to which Droknar mentioned the party had encountered people from there who were the victims of some unfortunate happenings. Finton revealed he had found phi symbols carved into his shutters the day after the kidnappings.   Meanwhile, Skreech was continuing his discussiong with Rigak regarding Orn, the silver golem's head they found in Timberwall. Following his third unsuccessful attempt to glean information from Orn, the golem's head exploded. Skreech was able to salvage the positronic brain from Orn's skull and implanted it in Gerald, who proclaimed he could see things more clearly than before. Skreech also traded the arcane battery for a Shield of Gleaming that Rigak had stowed away.   Back in the tavern, Droknar and Dacha approached a finely-dressed dwarf who was drinking and studying a map of the coast. The dwarf introduced himself as Beradin Glimdrak, a prospector who had just come from a mining operation near Kúhbúkiiya, but had been waylayed in Donborough as the mercenaries he'd hired to protect him had fallen ill. He mentioned finding Thaumium on his trip to the mines, and he showed a sample to Droknar who quickly recognized it as the same material as the stone he was carrying. Beradin asked if Droknar and his group would be interested in bodyguarding him on his way back to Mekkisir, offering them 2000gp and a good word with the Aubergine League should they want to register as actual mercenaries. Droknar brought the offer back to the group, who all agreed it sounded like a good idea.
